A hollow core door has an average life expectancy of about 20 to 40 years, with most lasting 30 years before they need to be replaced. Doors that are well cared for can last on the longer end, as long as no severe damage occurs.

Before buying one, measure your door width and make sure the one you want is long enough. Most door sweeps are 36 inches long, and you can cut them down to size with a hacksaw.

Wood is by no means the only type of front door material on the market. You can also choose from several other options, including:

  • Aluminum: Low-maintenance and affordable, but lacks insulation 

  • Fiberglass: Offers excellent insulation and durability for a decent price 

  • Glass: Offers beauty but less security or insulation, and a higher price tag 

  • Steel: One of the most economical options if you’re looking for affordability, low maintenance, high security levels, and a door that will last

  • Wrought iron: Attractive and secure, but costly and heavy 

Many doors can be cut to size, but it depends on the door material. Solid wood doors are relatively easy to trim to a specific size, while hollow core and metal doors are trickier and can usually only be shaved down a little before you risk damaging them. If your door needs a lot of adjustment, it's best to order a custom size or have a pro do the resizing to make sure it holds up over time.
