"Everyone who worked on my project were subcontractors. The contact person’s contracting company did not do a good job, then tried 3 times to fix it by remudding and painting. It truly was unacceptable drywall installation. This doubled the length of the project. Corners were cut, critical steps were not done. I was left finally with a finished project done correctly by another drywall installer. It was not a pleasant experience, and I do not recommend them."

It is a good idea to check in with your local city and state regulations before committing to building a shipping container home no matter where you live. This concept is pretty new across the country, and many places won’t let you build one.

The International Code Council (ICC) offers guidelines for home builders on the safe use of ISO intermodal shipping containers repurposed as building components, which can be helpful to review when planning or designing a shipping container home.

Having a garage installed certainly adds to the value of your home. The consideration is not whether it adds value, but for many, they want to know if adding a garage yields a return on their investment or ROI. While garages can add anywhere from 5% to 20% of the total value of your property, that doesn’t mean that they return 5% to 20% of the money invested in building them. Most homeowners build garages for a purpose but know that you can recover your investment when you sell or refinance.   

For a garage to count as living space—and towards your home’s total square footage—it needs to be attached to the rest of your home and have permanent finishings such as proper insulation, finished walls and ceilings, and adequate ventilation. It also needs to be livable at all times of the year, so it should be heated if it gets cold in the winter and cooled for hot summers.

The smallest size a standard 2-car garage can be is 20 feet by 20 feet, so at these dimensions, you could reasonably expect to fit two cars inside. However, it’s going to be a tight fit, especially if you have larger SUVs or pickup trucks. For smaller cars, 20 x 20 should be plenty for parking and some space to maneuver around the cars. A larger garage size would be better to ensure you have room to open the doors and transport groceries or other items around the cars.

Your epoxy garage floors will last two to 10 years, depending on foot traffic and maintenance. Clean your floor regularly with a mop or a power washer using a diluted ammonia or degreaser solution. Use five ounces of ammonia per gallon of water or a half-cup of degreaser per gallon of water.

Also, sweep regularly, clean up any spills right away, and install mats in places where you expect the most foot traffic.
