"Emlyn and his assistant Johnmark Were asked to remove a dying tree. The tree was 20 feet behind our garage and 10 feet from the neighbors' wooden fence. They trimmed the tree then felled the trunk without it touching either the garage or fence. The tree was about 45 feet tall. The stump was cut to ground level, they left some of the larger branches for fire wood (the wood was cut to 2 foot lengths and neatly piled.) The smaller branches were chipped and blown onto a garden where I wanted it. The trunk and very large branches were all removed, and the yard was cleaned of debris before they left. They estimated it would take 4 1/2 to 5 hours to complete, but they were totally done with the jobs in under 4 hours. I know now who I will call when I need another tree removal. I recommend them to anyone who needs tree removal. WAH"

"Stockyard was the first of four businesses to reach out to me through Angie. In two full days Stockyard went from cut to clean-up on eight of our adult trees (minus the stump removal). Mark and his crew were very thoughtful in protecting our lawn and accommodating our needs thoroughly. Mark and his crew were quick to answer questions and make minor adjustments along the way, always willing to please and meet our needs. Stockyard was very flexible and were also most competitive in price, no games or hidden fees. Having never worked with a tree service before, Mark and his crew set a high bar and I certainly would recommend them for all your tree removal needs. Very personable and professional was Stockyard Tree Service. Stockyard was mindful of our neighbors and was careful not to infringe or damage any plants or structures. Great business !!!!"

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

If a tree isn’t pruned, it can inhibit proper growth and fruit production, cause damage to both the tree and your property, and create entry points for pests and diseases. Pruning a tree enhances its stability, appearance, shape, and growth. Pruning trees regularly can also save you money long-term by avoiding overgrown or dangerous dying trees.

Whether tree roots will continue to grow after a tree has been cut down depends on the species. Some tree roots will eventually die because they can no longer get nutrients through photosynthesis. However, other species that reproduce through root sprouts can continue to grow and produce new sprouts for seven years or more. For example, the roots of elms, ficus, and willows tend to regrow aggressively, while the roots of pines, oaks, and maples will typically die. To determine if a root system is still active, look for new sprouts on the old trunk, stump, or any exposed roots.

Palm tree stumps can take as long as seven to ten years to rot naturally. Whereas some tree stumps rot within a year, palm trees tend to last longer due to their deep root networks. Chemical rotting (described above) can help speed the process up so your palm tree stumps rot in under two months.

If you want to take your tree-planting hobby beyond your outdoor space, here are a few great ways to do it:

  • Encourage your neighbors to participate in the Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA program, which has a four-step framework that helps communities grow and maintain their own tree cover.

  • Support businesses that plant trees.

  • Lobby your local government to plant more trees around your community.

  • Donate to a tree-planting charity.

The best time to transplant a tree is when it is dormant. For many trees, this means either in the fall after the leaves have dropped (around October or November) or in early spring before new growth begins (around March). The ideal timing can depend on the type of tree. Deciduous trees do well when moved in early spring or fall, while evergreens are best transplanted in early spring or late summer. For example, pine trees are best moved in early fall, but maples prefer late fall. Avoid transplanting in winter, as the frozen or hard, cold soil poses a significant risk to the roots and prevents the tree from acclimating properly.
