"We are new to the Milwaukee area and have remodeled several rooms in our house. The first couple of projects were a nightmare because of contractors that were slow and did not do quality work. When we hired Marty, we were hesitant because of our recent experiences. To our relief, Marty was everything we had been looking for. He was extremely responsive from the moment we contacted him and did everything he said he would in the exact time frame promised. After our inspection, our inspector said to me "Matt, I'm glad that your luck has changed after that last couple projects. Keep using this electrician, he's a professional." On top of being extremely satisfied with every aspect of Marty and how he conducts business, his pricing was about 40% less than his competitors. He's a young entrepreneur that understands the importance of keeping his word and showed me that he will do everything he can to continue his stellar reputation in Milwaukee and ensure the success of his business. I will continue to use Marty for any electrical needs I have in the future. The larger overpriced electrical companies in Milwaukee better watch out, Marty is a formidable competitor that will understandably take a lot of their business and bring the much needed "value" that milwaukeans with electrical needs have been waiting for."

"They did a great job. Very efficient and had great communication. When something came up we were made aware of it and it was also taken care in a timely fashion. Dorow's team made sure that everything was completed and met the criteria. Once the work was completed they made sure we had all documents needed for the inspector and once the inspector did the inspection and if anything needed to be added Dorow's crew made came out and added the necessary components. Overall very satisfied with a job well done!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

The average cost to install a home generator is $5,200, but total costs can range from $500 to $18,000 or more. The final price depends on several factors, including the generator's size, type, brand, fuel source, and the cost of labor and assembly. The generator's size is the most significant cost factor, as units that can power larger homes with higher energy demands cost more.

Cost breakdowns by generator type are typically as follows:

  • Portable or Emergency Backup Generators (1kW–7.5kW): $500–$2,000

  • Partial-Home Generators (9kW–20kW): $2,000–$6,500

  • Whole-House Generators (22kW–48kW): $5,000–$18,000

To ensure you get the right size unit for your needs without overpaying, consider hiring an electrician to calculate the electrical load of your essential appliances. It is also recommended to get at least three quotes from qualified installers to find the best fit for your budget.

Yes, in some locations, it is required by the National Electric Code (NEC) to have a transfer switch installed for electrical emergencies. In addition to following electrical code, generator transfer switches ensure your home is fully protected during a power outage. By switching the power from the main breaker to the generator breaker, you can seamlessly operate your HVAC, lights, appliances, devices, and more during an emergency.

With proper maintenance, a whole-house generator can last between 20 and 40 years. The specific lifespan depends on how often and for how long the generator is used, and some models may have their life expectancy rated in hours of operation. To maximize its lifespan, expect to spend around $150 to $300 per year for annual maintenance checks from a qualified technician. During these checks, a technician will inspect the engine filter, starting mechanism, fuel, lubrication, and coolant levels. Consulting your installer and choosing a low-impact fuel like natural gas or diesel can also help ensure your generator lasts as long as possible.

If you’re wondering whether gas generators produce carbon monoxide, know that natural gas generators do not produce carbon monoxide if they are functioning properly, as natural gas burns cleanly. However, if the generator malfunctions and the gas does not burn completely, there is potential for carbon dioxide to be produced. To prevent malfunctions, it's crucial to perform regular maintenance, including running the generator weekly and scheduling professional inspections every 6 to 12 months. Also, be sure to test your carbon monoxide detectors regularly to ensure they function in the rare case of the generator producing carbon monoxide.

It’s usually better to repair your generator if it isn’t working properly, as it will typically be much more affordable and should yield similar results. Generator repairs cost around $300 on average, while installing a new whole-house generator costs around $5,000 on average. The only exception is if you know your generator is reaching the end of its useful life, usually between 30 and 40 years. If you have an older generator, you could face multiple repairs in the coming years, which might mean that a full replacement will be more cost-effective over time.
