Engineered stone is known for its durability, lasting 15 to 20 years or longer. Of course, this range assumes high-quality materials and regular maintenance. After a couple of decades, the stone will start showing its age. Watch for discoloration, fading, stains, and burns, but it’s unlikely that engineered stone will experience structural failure.

Every durable material has a few downsides, including quartz. First, it is heat resistant but not heatproof, meaning it can't withstand broiling hot pots and pans. The material can also discolor from long-term exposure to sunlight. Marble is very porous, so it stains more than non-porous quartz. Exercise caution when drinking wine and juice or cooking with oil near the marble fixture.

Marble countertops don’t necessarily crack easily. However, they are more susceptible to damage than some other types of countertops. For example, they can develop etching from acidic liquids, such as lemon or tomato juice. Marble can also chip at the edges if you drop a heavy pan. A faux marble countertop isn’t as delicate as the real deal (depending on the material you’re painting over), but it can still get scratched if you’re not careful. Use hot pads and cutting boards to protect the countertop.

Repair costs range from $200 to $800, depending on the type and extent of damage. Minor cracks or chips may cost less while refinishing or resealing the surface increases costs.
