"We had an excellent experience with Luis and Monarch Drywall. Had some drywall repair work completed - you cannot tell where the new drywall transitions with the old/existing drywall. Luis also created an enclosure for a sump pump, with an access door installed. Additional work included an extension of the drywall on the walls up to the glass block windows. Work quality was outstanding. We were charged as estimated - a very reasonable price. Luis was very professional."

"I hired Andy and First West Construction in January 2020 to fix a poor start to a complete basement renovation by a previous contractor. I pointed out everything wrong that I knew and Andy and his main carpenter, Julio, found many more things wrong. We listed them all and Andy quoted me a very fair price to finish the entire project within five weeks which included concrete floor leveling, fixing wood framing, insulation, drywall, painting, trim, cabinet installation and flooring installation. The schedule of workers was Monday through Friday 9-5 but that didn't always happen. Sometimes they needed their workers on their other projects but also waiting for subcontractors caused slight delays. The project took about 11 weeks in all. I appreciated all the advice Andy and Julio provided. They are very professional and adaptable. They want the customer to be happy and pleased with the work and that causes less stress. They won't charge you extra for every little thing. They bought most supplies and I reimbursed them. Twice I generated long lists of little items that needed to be resolved with the project and they got them done within days. It wasn't great that a pile of the project's garbage was left outside our back door for a month; they didn't have a place to dump it, I guess. It was a small price to pay for a great finished product...a beautiful finished basement. Rodrigo, Douglas, Juan and their other workers were courteous, professional and usually highly skilled. I highly recommend this company for a home remodel, renovation or construction. Their work is very high quality."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

The easiest way to cut holes in drywall for electrical boxes is to use a spiral saw with a drywall router bit. Hang the drywall without cutting out a hole for the box, but make sure you measure and mark where the box is located on the wall. Once you screw in the drywall sheet, drill a small hole into the box void, insert the spiral saw bit, and move it around the edge of the box using the inside wall as a guide. You can also use an oscillating multi-tool with an electrical box cutout for fast, professional results.

You can put drywall mud over paint to even out the surface or entirely resurface it. Sand the surface with 280-grit sandpaper, vacuum the debris and dust with a shop vac, and clean it with a slightly damp cloth. Allow the surface to dry. Apply drywall primer, especially if you’re skim-coating an entire wall. Apply the right type of drywall mud over the surface and smooth it with a trowel. Allow the layer to cure fully, then sand it before applying another layer or painting it.

If the holes in the plaster are small, you can fill them with layers of patching plaster until they’re filled. After it dries, you can sand the plaster and paint over it. If the hole is much larger, consider using bonding plaster first and then a layer of patching plaster, completing the process with sanding and a layer of paint.

While every home has its own unique needs, ceiling drywall installation typically follows a staggered or stepped pattern to enhance structural integrity and reduce the visibility of seams. Starting from one corner, sheets are placed perpendicular to the ceiling joists, with the ends of adjacent sheets meeting along the center of the joist. The next row begins with a half sheet, ensuring joints don't align vertically. This alternating pattern, combined with proper taping and mudding, creates a seamless appearance and strengthens the ceiling structure, minimizing the risk of cracks over time.

The two most common drywall thicknesses for ceilings are 1/2-inch and 5/8-inch. For most standard residential applications, 1/2-inch drywall is sufficient and widely used. It provides adequate support and is lighter and easier to handle during installation compared to thicker sheets. However, 5/8-inch drywall is often used for specific cases where additional benefits are needed. It is heavier but provides superior sound dampening and fire resistance. You should consider using 5/8-inch drywall for ceilings in commercial buildings, between a garage and a living space, or above a finished basement to meet building codes or for enhanced soundproofing.
