"Emmanuel and Alberto did a fantastic job on my plaster ceilings. They not only fixed the cracks but they smoothed out the old popcorn and decorative plaster. They were courteous, efficient with their time, communicated well regarding the progress and were incredibly friendly and nice to work with, all for a reasonable price. I would highly recommend them if you have a plaster or drywall project. I will certainly hire them again in the future. 5 stars. Thank you!"

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Cracks, holes, water damage, and dents from heavy equipment often require repair.

Many homeowners choose to install tongue and groove over drywall. The great thing about this type of ceiling is that it hides imperfections. If your drywall is a little bit wonky or has some minor damage, the tongue and groove planks should cover it and give it an even appearance. Installation is simplest if you install battens over the existing framing before installing your tongue and groove planks.

Yes, it matters which side of drywall you use. One side is smooth, and the other is rough. The smooth side should be facing outward, toward the room, while the rough side should be hidden and facing the studs and framing of the house. The smooth side will be easier to apply tape, joint compound, and, later, paint to.

If you want to reduce sound transmission throughout your home, soundproofing drywall is a better choice than standard drywall. However, simply installing soundproofing drywall may not completely block out noise. You’ll get the best results from incorporating it into a larger soundproofing plan that includes proper insulation and framing studs.

Choose a drill bit that is the size of the screws of the anchors you will use. You aren’t drilling through metal or concrete—hopefully—so any standard twist, wooden or all-purpose drill bit will work fine. It’s also important to have a screwdriver capable of drilling through the drywall and into the stud. The good news is most available drills, even the older ones, can do this with no issue.
