However, BIBS must be installed professionally and can be a costly investment.

The R-value is a rating that measures the insulation’s thermal resistance (in other words, how well it insulates). For most pipe insulation, the R-value will fall between one and five. The higher the R-value, the more protection for your pipes. All pipe insulation materials should have an R-value listed in the product description or on the product label.

There are two reasons why cellulose insulation repels rodents (and insects). First, the insulation has been treated with boric acid, which is a natural pest-repellent. In addition, the loose-fill style of cellulose creates less-than-ideal conditions for mice and other rodents to nest and burrow, helping to keep them at bay.

Unfortunately, pipes can freeze when exposed to prolonged freezing temperatures, whether or not you have installed insulation covers. Insulation covers, however, are still an excellent idea as they can reduce the chance of your pipe freezing by keeping the pipes closer to the temperature of the water inside the pipe.
