"First, Bob Reber took the time to explain all aspects of what is causing the mold in our crawl space. His explanation was consistent with the mold testing specialist/microbiologist we hired. The options for turning our crawl space into a mini basement were in-line with what our microbiologist said. The installation team was great to work with. They were very knowledgeable, professional, and respectful of our property. They cleaned up all the post project debris too. We’re very happy with our fully enclosed crawl space that doubles as lock-and-key storage. We highly recommend the entire Basement Repair Specialists team."

Egress Windows FAQs, answered by experts

In Madison, egress window maintenance focuses on managing weather impacts. Conduct seasonal inspections, especially in spring and fall. It's critical to clear debris from window wells to handle heavy snowmelt and summer storms. Due to Madison's temperature extremes, you should inspect caulk and weatherstripping annually for deterioration and lubricate all hardware twice a year to ensure smooth operation and a proper seal.

Helpful?

You can safely handle minor egress window issues in Madison by clearing debris from the well, replacing worn weatherstripping, and sealing small gaps with exterior-grade caulk. However, you should call a professional for major water infiltration, foundation cracks, or broken glass. For your safety, always test for radon and be aware of potential lead paint in pre-1978 Madison homes before starting any work.

Helpful?

To avoid surprises with an egress window project in Madison, start by obtaining a building permit from the City of Madison Building Inspection Division. You must also call Diggers Hotline (811) at least three days before excavating. Plan for Madison's clay-heavy soil, which may require special drainage, and confirm the location of underground utility lines to prevent costly damage during construction.

Helpful?

For egress window maintenance in WI, your toolkit should be ready for four-season weather. Keep a small shovel and ice scraper for clearing window wells in winter. A wet/dry vacuum helps remove water after storms. You should also have outdoor-rated caulk, a caulk gun, and silicone spray lubricant on hand for sealing gaps and maintaining hardware against Wisconsin's harsh freeze-thaw cycles.

Helpful?

When planning an egress window project in Madison, consider local environmental and regulatory factors. The area's glacial till and clay soil require specific excavation and drainage techniques. If your property is near Lake Mendota or Monona, a high water table might necessitate a sump pump. Also, check for any historic district restrictions or tree preservation ordinances that could affect your project's scope and timeline.
