"As usual, the arrival of Rick and crew was 2nd to Christmas!!! It's Saturday - and they were hard at work early. I knew the job would be handled quickly and completely. Not only did they take care of the obvious, but Rick graciously trimmed up another tree that I'd been having issues with hanging branches rubbing the car. I love that they thoroughly clean up the remaining twigs and leaves and 'stuff' before they leave. (now if i could only get them to do that on the ENTIRE yard :-\ ) I've hired Eau Claire Tree Service a number of times over the years, usually for much bigger projects than this one. Never been disappointed. And I didn't even request a bid this time. GOOD JOB, GUYS."

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

Generally, if your neighbor’s tree hangs over your yard, you can legally trim overhanging branches. Keep in mind that you cannot cross your property line to cut the trees, and if you damage the tree by trimming it, your neighbor could sue you. Depending on the type of tree and value, this could mean dishing out two to three times the value of the tree.

It’s worth noting that the specifics of this type of tree maintenance and the guidelines around it may vary by location. Do your research and, most importantly, consult with your neighbor.

Yes, you can hire professionals to move a tree. Arborists and tree transplanting companies specialize in this type of work and use equipment like hydraulic tree spades to safely extract and relocate trees with their root balls intact. Since tree moving is a complex process, especially for larger trees, it’s best left to experts who understand how to protect the tree’s health and ensure the safety of everyone involved.

While it’s best to have access to large, healthy, strong trees in a safe position, treehouse living is still possible without them. Contractors can fit tree posts to build the structure onto or use posts as additional support alongside the trees themselves. If you’re in doubt about the suitability of the trees on your land, consult with a local treehouse builder before you start the project.

The best time to cut down a tree is during its dormant season, typically in winter or early spring, after all the leaves have fallen. Removing a tree during this period is advantageous for several reasons. Frozen ground helps secure the tree stump, protects the surrounding landscape from damage, and reduces the risk of the tree falling in an unintended direction. With the leaves gone, there is less risk of the tree's foliage getting tangled with other trees. Additionally, since this is often a slower season for tree services, you may be able to hire a professional at a lower rate. This dormant period is also the best time for tree trimming.

Permits are often required for large tree removals, especially in urban areas or for protected species, ensuring regulation compliance and neighbor safety.
