"we hired traditional plumbing ( john) 4 times now, and one of the 4 times was recently, to do various projects for us. We had quite a list for him, and he did an excellent job. One of the projects was to get our main water shut off- to work. It was old, and corroded and frozen. He had to call our city water dept, and have them come out to go into our lawn, to find the main valve out there, to go down 6-7 feet, to shut it off. While the city was doing that, john went to a supply store to pick up the necessary parts he would need to fix it. John then made the necessary repairs, putting in new parts, and he did a great job. He also put in a new dual sump pump that we had purchased- ( he helped us to find a good one-) basement watch dog, and so, we asked him to put that in for us too. and he hooked up the battery for us, and showed us how it worked- plus he also made a new shelf for that battery to sit on, above the sump pump. We also had him install a new vanity top and faucet we had previously purchased, and then also we had him unhook an old water softener for us, and cap the pipes. We also wanted him to put on a new turn valve ( which got broken) on the pipe for our toilet. He really did such a good job, and we are happy that we found him through Home Advisors. He is a very nice man, and his pricing is fair too. We would recommend him very highly."

"Professional, efficient, personable and reasonably priced. I had a new toilet replaced and they did a great job and finished the job quickly. They also were able to replace my bathroom faucet the same day. I will be hiring them again for any future plumbing needs. Highly recommend!!"

"Very polite serviceman,. I understand that bits of refuse from the hoses drop off on the floor, but I was very surprised to find I could not use the shower without a thorough cleaning. Best if he had let me know."

"I called and got a LIVE person!!! Her name was Erin and she was so helpful and receptive to what I needed to have done. She got an appointment scheduled for me the next day!! The plumber came out on time as promised. He was quick and very friendly. My dogs barked the entire time that he was at my house (which drove me nuts ) but he didnâ t let them bother him. He was relatable and said that his dogs would do the same thing. I am very satisfied with this company. I will definitely contact them for my next project. Mattox plumbing is friendly, on time, trustworthy and affordable."

Toilets questions, answered by experts

Start by gutting the old fixtures and features that need to be removed, such as the tile, vanity, and flooring. You may benefit by removing the toilet, even if you intend to use the same one. Next, install the new shower or tub, followed by the flooring, and then the drywall, which you should then paint. After that, install your new cabinets, vanity, countertop, sink, and faucet, in that order. Replace your light fixture next. Lastly, reconnect the toilet.

If you’ve accessed the bolts and nuts that hold your toilet seat in place and can’t unscrew them, it’s possible that they were overtightened or that the material corroded over time, making it impossible to unscrew. If that’s the case, you can either call in a plumber for help, or you can DIY a solution if you’re careful. Lay down masking tape around the mounting bracket and then use the tape as a surface to lay a hack saw blade. Move slowly to cut through the bracket and bolt, being careful not to damage the porcelain in the process.

The cost to install a new toilet typically runs from $225 to $530. This doesn’t include the price of the toilet itself, which can cost $90 to $1,500 depending on the model and features you choose. You can save money if you choose to install a toilet yourself. However, you might want to hire a pro for this project.

"Due to the many complexities of replacing a toilet flange, it is typically a job best left to the pros," says Jeff Botelho, Angi Expert Review Board member and plumber. "Many times it isn't as simple and straightforward as 'pop off the old one and pop on a new one' because the flange is either glued on (PVC/ABS), soldered on (brass/copper), or caulked in place with a lead & oakum joint (cast iron) and none of these things can be easily reversed without years of training and repetitive practice."

Yes, you should caulk a toilet to the floor for several reasons. Bathrooms are constantly wet—and if water splashes out of your shower and collects on your floor, you don’t want it seeping underneath your toilet, where it could potentially cause damage. Plus, caulk adds stability and helps prevent your toilet from wobbling.

It is okay to use a drain auger on a toilet, just make sure you are using the correct tip size. The auger is a plumbing snake with a protective sleeve to protect the porcelain toilet bowl from getting scratched. Using too large of an auger can cause the snake to loop back and damage the inside of the drain and plumbing.
