It’s very labor-intensive, and thus more costly.”

If you want the simplicity of simply smoothing over the texture, then you can cover up the ceiling using drywall explicitly made for the job. Ceiling-grade drywall can effectively seal off any popcorn ceiling containing asbestos while creating an updated home's smooth, relaxed finish. However, it does not eliminate asbestos, which can still be a problem if you hope to sell your home or remove all traces of asbestos.
