"LeafFilter doesn't clean gutters, they sell and install their LeafFilter Gutter products and only clean the gutters if you buy their product. I can't even begin to afford their product so I wasn't able to get my gutter cleaned by them."

"We own an older home. The entire gutter system had been replaced over two decades ago and sections of the system were no longer angled correctly allowing water to overflow in heavy rains. There also were some poorly thought out segments. The gutter system had two long stretches on two sides of the house. One an unattractive vertical stretch which was located close to a walkway and the other was a cumbersome set of interconnected, angled gutter sections. Most importantly, not all of the gutter runs had to be replaced, so we were looking for a company which would tailor a repair/replacement project. We were also considering installing gutter guards to eliminate the need for annual cleaning especially since we have spruce trees lining the house. One of the contractors we considered was Springrock due to their number of highly rated reviews. Springrock’s representative visited our home surveying the existing gutter system and listened intently to our concerns and the solutions we were hoping to find. He offered suggestions on how to reroute the troublesome runs which would eliminate the unsightly gutters and provide a much more efficient flow of water away from the house. He also designed gutter replacements for the four sections of gutters which were out of balance and damaged. A team came by to measure the angles of the system which were unique to our home and would allow Springrock to make ahead of time. The work by the three-man Springrock Team was expertly completed using well constructed materials. The replacement runs were perfectly fitted to the existing system. The two runs which replaced the unsightly ones blended right into the sides of the house and became invisible components. The Springrock Team worked feverishly through the afternoon into the evening hours and returned two days later to complete the project. Springrock gave us a replacement gutter system and gutter guards which were well designed, perfectly balanced, and attractive additions to our home. So very pleased we decided to choose Springrock as our contractor for this project."

Gutter Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Walking on the roof to clean gutters is unsafe and not recommended due to significant safety risks. It is especially dangerous on steep or slippery roofs, or if the roof is wet or covered in leaves, which increases the chance of a fall. In addition to personal injury, walking on the roof can damage shingles, potentially leading to water leaks. Instead of walking on the roof, use a sturdy ladder positioned on a stable surface to access the gutters. Be aware that using a ladder also carries risks, as it can be difficult to maintain balance while performing the work. You can also use ground-based cleaning tools. For safety reasons and to prevent damage to your roof, hiring a professional to clean your gutters is the best and safest option.

The best times of year to clean your gutters are typically in the spring and fall. Cleaning in the fall is crucial for removing leaves and debris that have accumulated, which helps prevent clogs. A spring cleaning ensures your gutters are clear and prepared for seasonal rainfall.

As a general guideline, experts recommend cleaning your gutters at least twice a year. However, the optimal frequency depends on several factors, such as local weather patterns, the type of gutters you have, and the number of trees on your property. If your home is surrounded by many large trees or pine trees, you may need to clean your gutters as often as every three to four months. If you have few or no trees nearby, twice a year is likely sufficient. In some cases, you may need to clean them a couple of times during the fall and spring to keep them clear and allow water to flow freely.

Yes, gutters can still get clogged even with gutter guards installed. While guards significantly reduce the amount of debris that enters your gutters, they are not 100% effective.

Small debris such as pine needles, seedlings, algae, small leaves, and pebbles can pass through the guard's screen or mesh and accumulate over time. Clogs can also form if the guards themselves are not cleaned and become overwhelmed with debris on top, preventing water from entering the gutter.

If this buildup is neglected, it can lead to clogs, water leaks, mold growth, and even plants sprouting from the gutters. The primary benefit of gutter guards is not the complete elimination of maintenance, but a dramatic reduction in how often you need to perform it, often from several times a year to just once a year or less.

There’s more to gutter cleaning services than simply scooping out fallen leaves and debris. You should consult your gutter professional about which services they’ll provide during your appointment to ensure you receive the best value for your investment.

Gutter cleaning usually consists of some basic services, including:

  • Removing debris such as leaves, twigs, pests, moss, algae, and pollen

  • Uninstall and reinstall gutter guards

  • Flush the gutter with a hose

  • Inspection for any damage or leaks

  • Recommendations for repairs

Once you’ve installed your gutters, you'll need to maintain them. You should clean your gutters once or twice a year to keep them functioning correctly. But if climbing a ladder and scooping out handfuls of wet leaf gunk is just not your thing, you can hire a professional gutter cleaner near you to do the job.
