"On a scale of 1-10, we give this company an 11, based on the outstanding results they delivered. This was an incredibly challenging project. We have a very steeply pitched metal roof on a two-story home with skylights and a turret. We hired M&H to remove many years of mold off our roof, clear and clean all the rain gutters and reseal our skylights. They responded very quickly to my bid request, and within the same day performed a physical onsite roof inspection, rather than just generating an estimate based on a Google Earth photo like so many of their competitors. We are seniors on a fixed income and this is a major expense for us. We solicited quotes from several reputable and highly rated roof cleaning companies. M&H provided us with an extremely competitive bid. Avi committed to a firm, fixed price upfront. All the other bids I received were subject to additional charges during the cleaning, Excellent results. Highly recommend."

"Prompt and punctual and polite. It was a small job, but Larry got right on it. I remember the eye rolling and condescension i received from another roofer a few years ago when i needed a small job done, They did the job but i never called them back. i called Larry instead. He already had good reviews on Angie's list and he fulfilled my expectations.

"Have hired the Home a Team for about 4 years running to do gutter or roof cleaning. Have always had good experiences & our most recent experience maintained that trend. In December, we took advantage of one of their Fall Specials to have them remove leaves from our (steep, composite) roof, clean the gutters and (woot!) clean the 1st & 2nd fl. windows, solar tubes & skylights. Also apply a zinc phosphate moss treatment. Because it was December, owner Bob let me know that the work was dependent on above-freezing temperatures and, indeed, the week of our job, temps dropped so we rescheduled but that was all communicated clearly & easily. I was fine with that (the only person who needs to be scampering around my roof in the snow is Santa) and we just postponed things a week. (Home Team sends a PDF with comprehensive info on what to move, what to cover, etc. to prepare for roof and/or gutter cleaning, well in advance of the job). On the appointed day, Juan showed up right on time. He was friendly, conscientious and worked very hard all day. The roof looks great (thoroughly cleaned) the gutters flow freely and the windows & skylights are sparkling. While Juan was working on the back of the house, he noticed there a slippery film on our composite deck so offered to clean that off as well. It was a much appreciated bonus. The work was finished by early afternoon and Juan and I walked the yard to be sure I was satisfied. I was. Clean up was thorough. It was a good experience and I am happy to recommend the Home Team to others."

The big roof companies seem to be more focused on profits.  The small companies are just downright scary.  You need a midsize company that is hungry for business, has a solid background and really professional employees.  Acme fit the bill perfectly.  Jay Clement really helped me jump off the precipice which was very daunting considering the size and cost of our project.  He listened to what I wanted and came back with a great quote that included FAR MORE than I received with any of the other seven roof bids.  I went with the Malarkey shingle which is one of the few shingle manufactures without class action lawsuits and is located in Oregon, take a look at their website.  I found them when I was checking out some roofers blogs and was impressed with the chatter about how great the Legacy shingle performs in a hurricane.  Acme was one of the few roofers who knew about Malarkey and used them because they wanted to install a good product.  The installation was on our 4-plex with a 7200 square foot roof with 6 skylights, four dormer garage roofs and multiple valleys.  The job took four days and the crew worked from 8am to 7pm until they were finished, including Saturday.   They used a large truck for disposal instead of a dumpster, so no driveway damage.  We did have some blocked vents but they got it fixed right away and went above board to fix a problem vent they didn’t have to.  Jay’s mantra was “we will make it right”.   Everything was cleaned up and we had no tenant complaints.   The crew was friendly and professional.

"We had a new roof put on our house by Johnson Roofing when we moved into our house in 2007 after our home inspection revealed some major problems with the old roof and ventilation in the attic. They were prompt, clean and courteous at the time of the original service. We recently had some concerns around a skylight. They came right out to recheck everything. Turned out there was nothing to be concerned about. Without us even asking, they even cleaned off our roof and gutters for us as a courtesy! They really stand by their work."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

When planning out skylights and deciding how big they should be, it's important to look at the dimensions of the interior space. In addition to changing a room aesthetically, skylights influence the illumination and temperature of the space below. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that a skylight’s size should never be more than 5% of the floor area in rooms with many windows.

The decision to remove a skylight depends on your specific circumstances and preferences. There are several reasons why you might consider removing a skylight, such as extensive damage, a desire for better insulation, or the need to change the room's layout. Additionally, if the skylight is causing leaks or other issues, it may be necessary to remove and replace it (which can incur additional skylight installation costs). It's important to assess your specific situation and consult with professionals if needed to make an informed decision.

A skylight's ability to withstand hail depends on factors like material quality and thickness. Impact-resistant options, such as tempered or laminated glass, fare better against hail compared to standard glass. Proper installation and regular maintenance also contribute to their resilience. While smaller hailstones may not pose a significant threat, larger ones can cause damage. Consider skylight protection methods like covers or screens in hail-prone areas to enhance durability and minimize potential harm.

Yes, solar tubes are easier to install than skylights because they’re lighter, smaller, and easier to handle. They also require less roof cutting and have a faster, simpler installation process. This means they’re a more DIY-friendly option for homeowners who want to add more natural light to their homes.

The type of lighting you choose can have a big part in the aesthetic and function of your space. Ambient lighting refers to indirect or diffused lighting that evenly reaches most areas of the space. Task lighting illuminates specific areas, such as a workspace. Accent lighting draws attention to details in your home, and decorative lighting draws attention to itself.
