There are two ways this can happen—if your carpet cleaner fails to dry the carpet properly, or if your carpet cleaner uses an excessive amount of water during the cleaning process. Mold can grow wherever moisture is present, so make sure you hire a pro who knows the process inside and out.

In some cases, yes, it’s safe to spray hydrogen peroxide on your mattress, but the solution can damage memory foam mattresses, so you should only use it on non-memory foam mattresses. If you have a standard spring mattress, you can mix hydrogen peroxide with cold water in a 1:1 ratio and spray that on your urine-soaked mattress. If you’re cleaning pee out of a memory foam mattress, swap out the hydrogen peroxide for white distilled vinegar, or call in a professional mattress cleaner to avoid doing damage to your mattress.

You should lightly clean your leather couch biweekly by dusting off any surface dust or debris with a clean rag. Every month do a deeper clean with a vacuum to remove crumbs or dust from between cushions. You should only condition your couch about once a year to avoid any solution buildup.

A carpet cleaner uses steam to penetrate the fibers of your carpet and remove dirt, while a carpet shampooer uses a detergent to clean the carpet’s surface. These are both efficient methods of cleaning your carpet, but steam cleaners do a better job of sanitizing the surface of the carpet.

You can use chlorine bleach to lighten a colored carpet or clean a white carpet. Bleach will naturally lighten your carpet no matter its color; however, there’s no guarantee the color will be even throughout the carpeting.

If you decide to lighten your carpet with bleach, apply it using a carpet cleaner to provide a more even application. After applying it, be sure to suction it out from the carpet fibers and rinse thoroughly with clean water.
