"I hired left coast builders to do a addition/extension on a 2nd floor bedroom roof deck addition of 92 sf. I paid him $16768.28 deposits on 5/13/2025. He sent one guy to my house on 5/13/2025. The worker spent 3 weeks demo 2 drywalls, 1 ceiling, rip out carpet , tore out some sidings of a 14' by 13' room. He billed me $130/hour for 55 hours work, total $7150. No one showed up in month f June. Two months into project only partial demo were done and costed me $7150. Going forward he wanted to charge me 8 hours to frame a 20" by 46" window, i.e. based on his labor rate, $1040 for framing a small window. He also charged me $400/ month for trailer/dumpster he owns. He also billed me $200/month for a portable potty that never delivered to the job site. The dumpster showed up only two weeks later after job started for 2 weeks on my driveway. he wanted $400/month. He initiated a change order without our involovement, knoweledge, approval unilaterally with architect, structural engineer and sticked us with a consulting fees and billings for materials total almost $ 2100. We were not consulted entire process, but were asked to pay and accept his hideous solution to the truss issues. We were forced to accept his solution of dropped beam of 12" above the location of my bed, a 4' from the exterior wall, totally quotesque and unacceptable in design on a modern home. All these changed were done without our involvement, knowledge, and approval. All fraudulent billings, inflated hours, inflated price, inefficency, incurrence expenses with architect, structural engineer, and truss maker without our knowledge and consultation violated the work contract. I therefore terminated the contract and demand him refund me $1276828. He wanted me to sign away my right to sue and only refund me $8300. I refused. The calculation of refund is very generous. I got estimates from 2 demo contractors for the same amount of work he did during 3 weeks of May. One estimate is $800 in 4 hours, another is $2000 for 2 guys in one day. I agree to pay him $3500 for demo work, $300 for trash bags, plastic sheetings, tapes. $200 for dumpster. Total $4000 for the demo work he did that he billed me $7150 for. The refund should be $12768.28."

"Dan & his team were on-time, stayed in schedule & cleaned up daily. Dan designed the shower bench and jacuzzi surround. He guided us through the process and asked questions along the way. The workman ship & tile work was impeccable. My husband and I have done most of the work to our home ourselves but this was a major remodel with plumbing & electrical being completely moved and updated and walls built and new everything so hiring someone was a big deal & I found him on this site. I could not have asked for more. Thank you !"

Closets questions, answered by experts

You can turn an adjacent room into a walking closet by just rearranging the room. This means removing the furniture and adding racks and an island in the center if you have that in your budget. Houses with two bedrooms connected to each other are great options for large walk-in closets that don't require any structural changes or much building whatsoever.

Costs depend on material, customization level, and additional features like lighting or sliding doors.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

Some features and upgrades you can add (some of which increase the closet’s value) are: modular shelving, motion-activated lighting, climate control, custom lighting, cigar humidors, revolving shoe racks, jewelry shelves, custom woodwork, and built-in laundry hampers. While only truly luxury closets have all of these, many custom closets have at least one special feature listed above.

A standard walk-in closet has dimensions of 7 feet by 10 feet at a minimum and an average of 100 square feet. Remember that the dimensions of the closet aren’t necessarily the usable space. This means that a 100-square-foot walk-in closet with shelves on each wall and an island may only have a walkable area of 50 square feet or less. Make sure you consider the effect of additions when you plan the room—mockups are a great idea.
