"I want to write a letter of appreciation to Max Swegle, technician for Mike’s Mechanical, Lewiston for the excellent service in replacing an outdoor water faucet in my home. In addition, the dispatchers for Mike’s Mechanical were so helpful and thorough in getting my appointment scheduled with only a two-day waiting period. I can’t express enough how I am impressed with all the personnel I dealt with. The broken faucet required replacing water pipes from inside the house in the ceiling to the outside for the faucet. Max knew what he was doing, was extremely conscientious, personable and concerned with doing the job right. Even though this company is 60 miles away from my residence they kept in touch with me, confirmed the appointment and were on time. You can’t go wrong with the service this company provides. Definitely a 5+-star business."

Chimney Sweep questions, answered by experts

To maintain metal roof health, schedule regular inspections, clear debris from gutters, and check for signs of corrosion.

Yes, algae-resistant shingles will prevent algae and moss growth, providing double protection for your roof and roof flashing. The copper-infused granules on algae-resistant shingles release copper ions that inhibit plant growth in general, so moss will have a harder time growing on your roof, too. Keep in mind that copper ions flowing off your roof during rainfall can also inhibit plant growth below, so your gardens and grass may be affected.

You may become so frustrated with the look of moss on your roof that you contemplate whether to clean or replace your roof. Fortunately, you don’t have to go as far as replacing it. After cleaning the moss, you can use a chemical solution to keep it away. For further protection, trim branches that overhang the roof, as fallen seed pods and leaves on the roof allow moisture to collect, encouraging moss growth. Consider adding zinc-coated flashing to the roof, too. As rain washes across the zinc, it leaves zinc particles behind that inhibit moss growth.

Clay tile roofs require minimal maintenance, as they stand up very well to the elements and often won’t fade in direct sunlight. They also don’t need sealing. Concrete tiles are also relatively low maintenance, but you will need more maintenance than with clay. You’ll need to seal concrete every few years to improve water resistance, and the color will fade a bit more quickly than with clay.

It’s possible that installing solar panels can lead to mold on the roof. The panels themselves are not the issue. Problems caused by improper installation—such as roof leaks and mounts that aren’t sealed properly—can cause mold. Another potential cause of mold is debris accumulation under panels, which can trap moisture. If you live somewhere with extreme snow, rain, or hail, your home could be more prone to mold.
