"It went great. Andy was able to start quickly and fit us in. He installed drywall, soffit and flooring as well as doing some Painting for us. Would recommend him to anyone and hire him again if we have any future home remodel or handyman services."

Small jobs welcome

"Dalton and his crew were hired to build a roof over an existing deck and replace a rotting fence. From the get-go, they were professional and hard working. On time and efficient, they kept us informed every step of the way. The result? What seems like a beautiful new porch and yard! We even went on to hire them for an additional project, replacing trim on our home. And the cost? Quite reasonable! We highly recommend Elk Valley Construction, LLC!"

"My kitchen was old and I wanted new countertops and new fixtures. They replaced what I requested and worked tirelessly until it was done. Even after I changed my mind about something, they altered the plans to satisfy me. I’m happy with the work and this is the second time I hire them to work on my home."

"Chris did an awesome job remodeling two of our bathrooms. He installed new vanities, manufactured wood flooring, toilets, baseboard and other finishing touches. The new bathrooms are so nice. Chris was great to work with and has excellent communication skills. He did these jobs when we were out of town and sent us photos as the project progressed and got in touch with us about any suggestions he had along the way. We also hired Chris to replace some rotted fascia birds and gutters after the first job. We'll definitely be looking to hire Chris in the future for other jobs we have at the house (a new deck is next on our wish list). Thanks Chris!"

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Whether a prefab home is worth it or not will depend on your personal needs and preferences. Overall, prefab homes tend to cost less than traditional homes, although they also tend to have lower resale values. Another thing to consider is that prefab homes usually last 50 to 60 years or longer, while traditional homes last 50 to 100 years or more.

Yes, you can finance new construction, though the process often requires a different type of loan than one for an existing property. There are several financing options available:

  • Construction-to-Permanent Loan: This is a common option where a single loan covers the building costs and then converts into a traditional mortgage once construction is complete and you move in.

  • Construction Loan (Stand-Alone): This type of loan provides funding only for the duration of the construction project. Once the house is built, you will need to pay the loan in full, typically by securing a separate, standard mortgage.

  • Builder Financing: Some custom homebuilders offer their own financing options, which may only require a down payment to begin the building process.

  • Bridge Loan: This can be a useful short-term loan to fund your new construction while you are in the process of selling your old home.

  • Home Equity Options: If you are building a second home, you might be able to use a home equity line of credit (HELOC) or a cash-out refinance on your current property.

It's also important to be aware that some lenders may have restrictions on financing for DIY house builds, so be sure to verify that you can secure financing before starting your project.

Typically, architects do not build homes in a hands-on sense of doing the actual framing, roofing, or other building. Architects usually do not have the training and experience to build the homes they design. An architect would need to know how to do the specific trades required to build a house, which is possible but not a common practice. A general contractor or homebuilder typically oversees the actual details of building the house that the architect designs.

While it’s never too early to start planning for a major home improvement project like a home addition, give yourself at least a month or two to plan and design your addition, find a contractor, and get the permits in order. For larger projects like a second-story addition that require designing with an architect, plan on three to four months of preparation.

Modular homes last an average of between 50 and 75 years, and high-quality modular homes can last for 100 years with proper maintenance. For comparison, a standard home lasts 50 to 100 years and can push to 150 or longer with good maintenance. Modular homes provide better long-term value in that they are significantly more affordable and can last almost as long, but some buyers are wary of modular home longevity, so the actual value if you sell could be lower.
