"The project was essentially a remodel of a circa 1950's beach cabin with a small addition. We chose Baker and Son on the recommendation of our neighbor who had used them to build a detached garage. Our plans were relatively simple at first: build the addition, expand the kitchen, build a new bathroom and create a new entry. As work was underway, it became clear through the advice of Baker and Son that our kitchen was too big and out of scale for the cabin. We ended up eliminating some walls and opening up the cabin in such a way that created one large room but still a separate kitchen, dining and living. It was a huge improvement to the original design. In addition to the interior work, Baker and Son completely overhauled the exterior which included new windows and siding. New structural headers were required because they didn't exist. Also, since the cabin is post and pier construction, they leveled and strengthen the existing structure. Work included new skirting as well. Their attention to detail was very impressive. They are masters at creative problem solving, patient, responsive and positive. They have a very strong sense of design. We were never pressured into quick decisions. The contract arrangement for our project was essentially time and material because formulating a bid on an old cabin remodel would involve too many unknowns. We agreed to a fair hourly rate and all material and subcontracted work we paid directly with no additional overhead or fee. This saved us money. Since we lived out of town, Baker and Son were so well connected with various vendors and subcontractors, it simplified making arrangements. Now that our project is complete, we are so excited about the end result! We would highly recommend using Baker and Son Construction for any project."

Impact windows have a few disadvantages. First and foremost, they’re expensive. Impact windows cost roughly 25% to 35% more than standard windows. Unless you spend a lot more money, they’re also not all that customizable. Finally, because of their design, they don’t let in as much air as a typical window, which can cause ventilation problems.

Look for stickers at the top or inside of the frame, like in the tracks when the window is open. Some brands also stamp their name onto the frame itself or place it between the panes of glass, although this is less common. If you can’t find the info on the window itself, consider asking your neighbors or HOA.

Sometimes, you can buy windows directly from the manufacturer, and it may be cheaper than buying through a third party or wholesaler. Manufacturers may also offer more options, including custom shapes and features, or better warranties if you purchase through them directly. 

However, some companies limit the ability to buy from them, especially if you need standard pre-fabricated sizes, so don’t expect this service from every manufacturer.

When specifying window sizes, manufacturers use a standard four-digit code system. The first two numbers represent window width, and the last two represent window height. For example, a window with a code of 2917 has dimensions of 2 feet, 9 inches wide by 1 foot, 7 inches high. Windows with even dimensions include zeros as placeholders. For example, a window that is 5 feet wide by 2 feet high would have a code of 5020.

Most properly installed and maintained windows last between 15 and 20 years. Fiberglass windows last much longer than your average window. Since they don’t warp from temperature changes, rust, or rot, you might be able to hold onto fiberglass windows for up to 40 years. On the other hand, poorly maintained wood windows may only last for a few years.
