"Terrible non existent customer service - I regret not terminating this earlier as we were a decade + long victim of their incompetence. No contact. Never a single call to us to say -how is it working? -- Only got routine testing of the system (text messages at no scheduled frequency) - after complaining the system was not working for - how long??? Antiquated, obsolete system. Nasty interaction with staff there who talked over me and interrupted repeatedly. it's not about you, sweetie - I am the customer! Oh, wait - no longer a customer and now an honest reviewer --"

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

You may be able to get a broken key out of a lock by yourself, depending on the situation. If a portion of the key is still protruding from your lock, try lubricating the keyway and using pliers or even a bobby pin to pull the key out of the hole. If you have jigsaw blades handy, you can also try using those to grab onto the stuck key and pull it out.

But, if neither option works or you can’t reach the key, your only option is to call a locksmith for help.

Newer, electric-powered door locks generally have a life span of five years or less. That’s thanks, in large part, to a phenomenon called planned obsolescence, in which products are programmed to need replacing after a certain amount of time. That’s also why older, manual, push-key locksets can last up to 30 years with regular cleanings and maintenance. When it does come time for a new set-up, know that the cost to change locks ranges from $130 to $500 on average.

Yes, you should change the locks as soon as you can after completing the purchase of a house. This is a matter of privacy and security, as you have no idea how many copies of the keys the previous owner made. You can change the locks yourself or hire a pro to replace or rekey the lock, which costs $50 to $100.

Yes, it’s possible a burglar can get through a deadbolt. Some types of deadbolts are harder for an intruder to get through, though. For example, a single-cylinder lock only requires breaking a window nearby and simply turning it. While other locks, such as a double-cylinder lock, may offer greater protection and make it harder for an intruder, no deadbolt is 100 percent effective.

Door locks should be changed roughly every seven years. The average lifespan of a door lock is seven to 10 years, so it’s best to err on the side of caution and change them early, especially if they are showing signs of wear and tear. Examples of deterioration include visible rust and difficulty opening or closing the door. Some locks can work safely beyond 10 years, but it depends on how often they are used and whether they are exposed to damaging environmental conditions like precipitation or extreme temperatures.
