"This is my second review of BJs.  On our first experience we finished the demo of our bedrooms and hallway and completely filled the 20 yard dumpster.  BJs gave us a coupon for a discount on our next rental and so we decided to go ahead and demo the finished attic while the weather was still good. Once again contacting BJs was easy, the staff on the phone is very friendly and helpful.  Drop off happened promptly, and they picked up on the day they promised they would.  The drivers always seem pretty happy too, must be a good place to work I assume. Not much more to this kind of service than being prompt and friendly.  The dumpster itself is a big metal box that holds garbage, so nothing out of the ordinary there.  But dealing with the people at BJs is extraordinary (and was one of the better bargains I could find when shopping around).  It was nice of them to give us a discount on another rental.  While I enjoy using their service I hope I don't have to rent another dumpster again for a very VERY long time."

Garbage Removal questions, answered by experts

The most common garbage disposal size in the U.S. is 1/2 horsepower. This size is ideal for households with three or fewer people or those that don't produce much food waste. Although 1/2 horsepower can't handle the typical food waste load for a household of four (which is about 250 pounds of food waste annually) as effectively as 3/4 horsepower, it remains the most common size of garbage disposal on the market.

Soil is just one of the items you shouldn't put down a garbage disposal. Garbage disposals are only meant for soft, non-fibrous foods. Large amounts of topsoil, dirt, or rocks will damage the blades of your garbage disposal or clog the pipes. If a small amount of dirt goes down the drain as you repot a plant, you shouldn't have to worry, but never dump a whole pot of soil in the sink for fast disposal.

Garbage disposals can be considered bad for the environment due to their electricity usage, but good for the environment because they reduce the food waste sent to landfills. If everyone used a garbage disposal, it would tax the wastewater treatment facilities in that region, but if we had to choose one of the options, we’d say they are a net positive on the environment when used correctly.

In some cases, it’s more cost-effective in the long run to replace a garbage disposal, but it depends on the specific issue you’re having and the age of your disposal. You should ask a garbage disposal repair tech for a quote to repair your appliance and then see if it would be more worthwhile to replace it. Additionally, garbage disposals last for around 15 years, so if you know your appliance is reaching that age, it’s likely better to pay for a new garbage disposal rather than sink money into repairs.

On average, it takes one to four hours for a professional to install a garbage disposal. This includes removing the old unit, taking necessary measurements for positioning, removing and fitting new pipes, and installing the brand-new disposal system. If there are unforeseen issues, such as accessibility concerns, the process takes longer.
