"In April / May, 2026, we worked with Missi painting on my Mom's 215 year old Colonial house in Alstead, NH. They gave us a very reasonable estimate to scrape, paint and replace some rotted boards. The crew showed up when they said they would and did a great job, my Mom was super happy with their workmanship, and actually immediately hired them to do some more work on our barn. I live out of state and personally dealt with Fernando, he was super responsive, he sent me texts and emails with the schedule, estimates, work updates, pictures etc. and was on site while the work was being done. The next time we need some painting work done Missi will be the first company I call."

Small jobs welcome

"Adam and his team did an amazing job on completing a backyard fence for my family. He was hardworking and detailed with the work. Kept me updated through every step of the way from the permit process, ordering materials and check-ins as the build was happening. Our fence is great! He also completed a custom railing and gate to attach to our existing deck. Will definitely be using we do it all again for future projects."

"Adam and Dan, of Magpie Painting, really are masters of their craft. I cold called them, the same day I heard from them by text and we set-up a walk through. In a matter of hours after the walk through, I received a professional, detailed and fair quote. Upon agreeing to their proposal, a schedule was set, they kept to it and were more than willing to integrate my rather adventurous color scheme. Their attention to prep was above and beyond anything I've seen and, accordingly, their lines were perfect! They also provided some excellent carpentry that finished off an almost finished renovation. Their suggestions were excellent, the communication was proactive, and their work was outstanding -- they really enjoy and take pride in what they do. I will be calling them for any painting projects I have going forward and highly recommend them to anyone looking for excellent painters."

Painting questions, answered by experts

If it rains after you paint your fence, you may need to apply another coat of paint after the fence thoroughly dries. This will ensure a good seal if the rain weakened any areas of the paint. However, if your paint had enough time to dry thoroughly before it rained, you should have no problem.

Acrylic latex paint is the best option to use on your outdoor wrought iron fence, because it holds up well against the elements. Use a high-quality, exterior-grade paint specifically designed for use on metal. You can choose between spray paint or regular liquid paint. As for primer, it's best to use an oil-based and rust inhibiting option before painting your wrought iron fence.

A cedar fence will actually last quite a long time even if you don’t treat it with stain. In fact, you can expect to get between 15 and 30 years out of an untreated cedar fence. However, if you want to preserve its color and extend its life, treat it with a combination stain and sealer every three to five years.

You can paint an old wooden fence, but make sure first to do a deep clean (ideally with a pressure washer) and inspect the fence for any existing damage. Painting over dirt and debris will cause your paint to peel. Once you’ve cleaned and repaired any minor issues, use a primer and high-quality satin paint.

Your tool of choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. Many DIYers prefer applying stain with a lint-free rag, but others stick with a paint brush or a roller. Wipe the stain and work it into the wood, working with and against the grain. If you’re applying multiple coats, allow the stain to dry for around four hours between coats.
