Many reviews by trusted repeat customers and just another great way to get familiar with Barton's Perfection + LLC. "We hired Cody to do some wallboard repair and to replace 4 interior Luan doors with 4 standard Masonite slabs in existing pre-hung door frames. The wall repair came out great, but the doors turned out to be well beyond his skill level. A carpenter friend had measured and delivered the doors to us, but he became too busy to do the work so we hired Cody. Surprisingly Cody claimed the standard doors were 1/8â too wide and too tall, and that both the width and height had to be trimmed. We questioned him but trusted his â expertiseâ and relented. He wound up cutting off so much of the width and height that we are left with visible gaps between the doors and the jambs. And because the barrel of the doorknobs did not reach the strike plates, he "fixed" his mistake by â doubled upâ two strike plates on each door so three catch - the fourth still doesn't. In short, he ruined $400 worth of doors, which have to be replaced â and installed â by a competent contractor. Cody refuses to discuss a solution, claiming that he warned us that trimming the doors would be problematic, and blaming us for telling him to cut the doors â all of which we vigorously deny. He was the one who suggested the â fix,â and we trusted he knew what he was doing. It wasnâ t until he was finished that we saw the horrific mistakes and that his workmanship was abysmal. Weâ ve never written a bad review but cannot recommend Bartonâ s Perfection if you need carpentry work. His work was far from â perfection.â"

Decks and Porches questions, answered by experts

To child- or pet-proof your deck railing, look for railing systems with narrow spacing—under 4 inches—between balusters or panels. For added safety, consider installing a clear acrylic or mesh guard along the inside of the railing to prevent small limbs or paws from slipping through. Avoid horizontal rails that adventurous kids can climb like ladders. You can also add self-closing gates at stair openings to limit access.

Cutting the boards directly is one of the fastest ways to remove deck boards with hidden fasteners. Mark two parallel lines that are one-third of the total measurement on both ends and cut out the centerpiece. Then, remove the end of the board that doesn’t have a fastener. Finally, pry open the fastened side and pull it up to pop out the screw or access the fastener. This also allows you to salvage portions of boards for other projects.

Deck pier blocks are one alternative to traditional deck footings. Unlike poured concrete and buried post footings, deck blocks don’t require digging or pouring. They’re best for small or low-to-the-ground decks. Keep in mind, though, that not all areas allow the use of deck pier blocks, so consult your local building codes before choosing them for your deck.

Composite decking may never warp, or it may warp quickly. Several factors can influence the rate of warping, including the material's quality, installation method, and installation location. Generally speaking, high-quality materials that have been installed properly are drastically less prone to warping.

Constant exposure to inclement weather conditions can damage your deck, causing it to fade, warp, or crack over time. Regular maintenance keeps it looking and performing its best. That means giving it a good cleaning and applying a quality sealant or wood treatment to help defend against moisture, sun damage, and everyday wear.
