While power washing isn't a requirement before you stain a fence, it can make the job much easier and faster while reducing manual labor requirements. The stain will not work if the wood is full of dirt and dust, so power washing, sometimes called pressure washing, is a fast and effective way to prepare the wood for staining. Remember that you need to stain or repaint relatively soon after the wood has dried so that there isn’t time for dust and dirt to build up again.

However, always use a dilute solution, as concentrated dish soap can clog the machine. One tablespoon of dish soap per 1.5 quarts of water is a good place to start.

Most deck lumber is softwood that you can easily damage with the spray from a power washer. Most power washers, though, have a lower pressure setting that’s relatively safe for deck materials if you’re careful to hold the nozzle at least a foot from the surface and continue moving without hovering in one area. 

It is possible to clean gutters with a pressure washer but work with a maximum psi of 1,800 to minimize the risk of damaging your eavestrough. And, instead of climbing a ladder, it’s safer to use gutter elbow extensions. These avoid the risk of the machine’s pressure causing you to lose stability while up high.

Some hard surfaces, such as concrete and asphalt, tolerate pressure washing well, and it can be a great way to keep them clean. However, you should avoid pressure washing clay or grass as you'll quickly destroy them.

Additionally, pressure washing can remove paint lines from any surface, so you need to be careful, and it may be best to let professionals handle the job.
