"Dale did a fantastic job touching up our home and repairing the drywall in our bathroom. We would highly recommend him. His rates were less than half the price that Paint Genies quoted me. The only small complaint we would have is that we made a check out to J&D painting and he informed us that he didn't have a buisness checking account (which we found odd for someone who says they are licensed and bonded). We had to rip up that check and write him a different one in his name. Either way, he did a great job and we would have him back in a heartbeat if we needed him."

"Nathaniel was very professional and patient with my aunt. I hired him virtually. We spoke on the phone and I expalined that my Aunt had several projects. She would likley fine tune the extent of the work since she gave me a general list. Nathaniel was very flexible. My aunt and he came to an agreement. His work was spot-on. She was very pleased. The painting had to wait until spring. He agreed to wait and come back in three months. He came back as promised. In all of his work, he was very professional and did it expertly. I highly recommend him."

"He was recommended to us by a friend. He was very polite and respectful to my home and my family. He got the job done quickly and professionally. He also gave us a free estimate. His prices are very fair for the work he did. We will hire him again for all future projects."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Although they are used for similar tasks, spackle and joint compound are not the same. Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum and is primarily used for large-scale projects like taping and finishing seams on new drywall. Spackle is composed of gypsum and binding agents, making it a thicker compound best suited for small wall repairs like filling nail holes or cracks, as it dries quickly and is easy to sand. For small repairs, either product can be suitable. However, you can use joint compound for small jobs in place of spackle, but you cannot use spackle for large-scale taping and mudding projects.

Whether you need a drywall anchor depends on the specifics of your project, particularly what you're hanging and where. You do not need a drywall anchor if you can screw or nail the object directly into a wooden stud, as the wood provides sufficient support and stability. However, if there are no studs in the location where you plan to hang the item, you should use drywall anchors to ensure it is securely supported. For very lightweight objects, like small pictures, adhesive picture hanging strips can be a suitable alternative to anchors.

Beadboard is a decorative element and lacks the structural integrity of drywall. It cannot hold much weight and is not meant to be used as an insulator or moisture barrier, like drywall is. In almost all cases, beadboard is placed over an existing wall surface which, in modern days, is usually drywall, but decades ago could have been wood paneling.

You should start looking for a drywall installer by choosing a local company with positive online reviews and ratings with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Next, confirm that the professional is properly licensed using Angi’s contractor licensing tool, and ask the installer if they are fully insured. It’s a good idea to ask for recent customer references and call them to get their honest opinion about the contractor and their work. You can also ask the installer if they guarantee their work or provide a workmanship warranty.

There are a few ways to figure out if your walls are plaster or drywall, but the pushpin method is probably the easiest option. To try it, choose a part of your wall where you can insert a pushpin or thumbtack without leaving an obvious mark. If it goes in easily, you have drywall. But if the wall is tough to penetrate, that’s plaster.
