"I was very impressed with Sentri Homes - their customer service was excellent. They sent a subcontractor to install some vinyl laminate in my bathroom and he ended up getting glue all over the carpet in our bedroom. The sub ended up ghosting both me and Sentri, leaving me stuck with a ruined carpet. Sentri stuck with me for over a month to get the carpet replaced with the identical original and to get the vinyl job 100% completed. The carpet was a Home Depot exclusive and Sentri handled everything with them. I will be using Sentri for a much bigger renovation I have coming up soon, because I know that they will make sure everything gets done right no matter what problems come up. The vinyl looks great too."

"We recently had Richline install vinyl siding, trim and gutters on our Chesterfield home. They were extremely competitive with their price and did a wonderful job. The work was completed in three days, which was as promised. They did a very professional job, the crew that completed the work was polite, very detail oriented, and made any corrections we requested. I would recommend this company and would use this company in the future. They did excellent work. We were well satisified."

"Requested an estimate through HomeAdvisor to have an approximately 50 foot long section of gutter replaced across the front of our two story Roanoke County, Virginia home and Ted George of Sentry Exteriors arrived on March 4. Ted inspected the job site and provided the estimate and pointed out other potential "non-critical" issues associated with the existing roof (waviness - potential wood sheeting underlay damage - and how the previous homeowner had not installed new shingles in 2010 using the proper drip edge and ridge cap shingles) and gutters (beginning to pull away from metal fascia on the back of the house). In addition to replacing the damaged gutter section, Ted provided estimates for other items we had discussed (new siding, roof and gutters). Ted was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable and answered all our questions. Ted was on site for over an hour. We received a second on site estimate a week later that was almost twice the price quoted by Sentry and there was no mention of any other potential problems with the existing roof or gutters (estimator did not perform a "walk around"). The estimator was on site for less than half an hour. We scheduled the replacement of the damaged front gutter section with Sentry on March 16 and the work was performed on March 26. The friendly two man crew arrived on time. After measuring the exact replacement length, one person formed the new gutter section on the ground while the other carefully removed the existing gutter leaf covers from the old damaged gutter section then removed the screw nails from the old gutter. After the damaged gutter section had been dropped to the ground, the crew member on the ground hand carried the new 45 foot long section of 27 gauge seamless aluminum gutter across the yard and up a ladder to the other member on the roof. The gentleman on the roof attached the new gutter section to the fascia by himself, drilled holes and attached the downspouts, and finally reattached the existing leaf covers to the new gutter. The damaged gutter was loaded into the Sentry trailer for disposal. The job was completed in approximately an hour. The new gutter was a close match in color (classic cream) to the existing window frames and gutters. Billing and payment was handled online using QuickBooks. Overall it was a very positive experience and I will use Sentry Exteriors again for future home improvement projects when funding is available. If there were any non-positive aspects associated with this experience (and I'm no expert on gutter replacement), the two man crew (one on the roof holding the 45 foot long section near the center and the other on the ground) "eyeballed" the placement of the new gutter and the drainage slope instead of using any tools or guides, and the gentleman on the roof did not use any fall protection or tie off the ladder."

Siding questions, answered by experts

If you’re wondering how to make wood siding last longer, including Composite T1-11, inspect it annually or quarterly to spot and repair cracks, holes, or chipped areas. You’ll also want to re-stain the wood every 3 to 5  years or repaint every 7 to 10 years for protection (note that repainting requires stripping and sanding off old paint as well). Lastly, keep up with regular cleanings using a garden hose or low-pressure power washer to help prevent grime and discoloration.

Vinyl is the most common shingle siding due to its rigid PVC design, longevity, affordability, and ease of installation. The next most popular types of shingle siding are fiber cement, which is in the mid-range for prices, and cedar shake, which is the most expensive. Consider the upfront cost, ongoing maintenance costs, and durability in your specific climate before deciding.

A self-etching primer is the best option for aluminum siding. These are specifically designed to bond with bare metals, among other surfaces, leading to better adhesion and corrosion resistance. An oil-based primer is a good alternative if you can’t find a self-etching primer.

There should be small gaps between your roof and the walls of your home, and other buildings. These small gaps let building materials shift, expand, and contract with weather and other outside forces, and they prevent moisture from wicking down walls from roofing and gutter systems. Without these strategic gaps, your home’s exterior and its finishes can sustain water damage, decay, peel, delaminate, and crack. However, there is a fine line between a smart gap and a problematic gap—all  gaps should be small, intentional, and covered or filled in with foam insulation to prevent pests from using them as access points.

Siding pros typically charge by the square foot when providing estimates for siding projects. They’ll take the material cost and add in an estimated labor fee, and some contractors will include an additional upcharge to account for profit, waste, and unexpected issues. Another important price factor your pro will consider is the quality of your home’s current siding, which they’ll need to remove, and your home’s sheathing. If pros have to make any additional repairs to your home’s exterior, the added labor will also influence your final siding cost.
