"I cannot say enough positive things about Robbie and Pierce Siding & Window Co. Robbie is one of the friendliest and most attentive contractors I have ever come across. He is passionate about doing the job the right way. His crew are lifelong seasoned veterans in the siding and window business, as is he. The final product is top shelf quality. Robbie has gone out of his way to answer any and every question I have had, and I have put him to the paces. Robbie and his crew are friendly, and just a passionate about the product and the work as he is. Robbie and the crew installed a new roof, new skylights, new gutters and downspouts, a complete vinyl siding installation,wrapped the house in foam insulation, and wrapped all my existing windows. This was a big job! Our house is 4 floors and over 6000 square feet. They finished on time and on budget. Just knowing that the job was going to be done right was the greatest comfort, I never had to worry. Our house is in very highly trafficked part of our subdivision and I can’t begin to tell you how many people stop and tell us how amazing the house looks. It looks like a brand-new house and its 45 years old. Cars would literally stop in the middle of the street as they drove by in amazement! There should be small gaps between your roof and the walls of your home, and other buildings. These small gaps let building materials shift, expand, and contract with weather and other outside forces, and they prevent moisture from wicking down walls from roofing and gutter systems. Without these strategic gaps, your home’s exterior and its finishes can sustain water damage, decay, peel, delaminate, and crack. However, there is a fine line between a smart gap and a problematic gap—all  gaps should be small, intentional, and covered or filled in with foam insulation to prevent pests from using them as access points.

You cannot install clapboard siding on a bare, unprepared surface. Clapboard siding requires a clean, sturdy base made from plywood or similar materials, sometimes called backerboard. Then, it needs an underlayment or sheathing, a moisture membrane to help protect the exterior wall.

Note that sometimes clapboard siding is caulked as it’s installed for additional protection. We don’t suggest this: Caulking the siding can trap moisture inside the clapboards and lead to moisture damage over time. The siding needs some space to “breathe,” especially in rainy weather.

While you can perform minor siding repairs or even install it yourself over small areas, it is generally best to hire a professional siding company. Siding installation is a time-consuming and complicated process that requires specialized tools and experience. Most homeowners lack the skills to ensure proper alignment, weatherproofing, longevity, and durability, especially for more complex jobs like vertical siding.
