"Unusual, in my case, is that I had to deal long distance with all companies involved due a family illness and was only able to get to the work location for a few hours during the process. This, of course, made everything a bit more difficult for all concerned. There was some delay in initial contact due to computer problems on his end. He was honest about when he thought he could review and give an estimate and followed up accordingly. The step units had been overgrown with ivy and I had a different company work on removing ivy and spraying them and the immediate surrounds for poison ivy, oak, etc. He reported to me he had to do some additional clearing and had a very bad allergic reaction to whatever brush or such was still there. This did require treatment for him and slowed the process slightly. I apologized and had the other company return and recheck and spray again and then as weather allowed the work went forward with some of his workers as the doctor suggested he not proceed with the work personally due to the reaction. I was able to visit briefly midway and also when he reported the work completed. I did have a few concerns and let Mr. Harvey know. He had his workers return to address these and then gave me a call to let me know. My final check did find most of my concerns were addressed, but some mortar cement and brick pieces were left around the work areas that I thought might have been removed (although I did not feel this worth another call). Overall, it was a positive experience and Mr. Harvey was positive in dealing with situations that may not have been optimum."

Welding questions, answered by experts

While a high-speed circular saw will cut through metal, and even cut through multiple sheets at once, the fast-spinning saw blades create a lot of heat. This heat can damage paint and other protective coatings, leading to serious problems like rust over time. The cost to paint a metal roof again to avoid this damage is typically an additional $0.50 to $1 per square foot.

Since water heaters are primarily made of metal, they’re commonly accepted by scrap yards and collectors. Don’t expect to fetch a high price, though—water heaters are mostly steel and aluminum, which aren’t high-value metals. Some components are made of more valuable metals, like brass and copper, but they’re a small portion of the heater and won’t affect the price much.

It will likely take an experienced pro less than an hour to install a ground rod, which is another reason why letting them handle the job is such a good idea. Safety concerns aside, it would likely take you much longer to install a ground rod if you decided to take this one as a DIY job.

This all depends on the tools you have on hand and whether you’re trying to cut a straight line or shapes.

The best tool to use for straight lines is either a circular saw or table saw. When cutting shapes, a jigsaw will be the easiest and most precise tool to use.

Cutting rectangular ductwork requires careful measurements and the right technique. Use a measuring tape and pencil to mark the cutting lines accurately. Tin snips are excellent for straight cuts on smaller ducts. For more extensive or thicker rectangular ducts, a reciprocating saw with a metal-cutting blade is effective.

Ensure the duct is well-supported and secure while cutting to prevent wobbling and maintain precision. After cutting, use a metal file to smooth any sharp edges, ensuring safety during installation.
