"Great repair work of a softball sized hole in our tub. Roy did such a good job that we can't even see where the repair area is! The cost was VERY reasonable, especially given he had to travel about 90 minutes to our home. It's also important to note that Roy is a very nice man. It can be unsettling to let a stranger into your home. Roy is one of the good guys. Thank you for a job well done!!"

"Outstanding Walk-In Shower Installation and Attention to Detail We recently had our jetted bathtub removed and replaced with a beautiful, high quality walk-in shower, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results. From start to finish, Team member, John, demonstrated professionalism, skill, and attention to detail. John handled the demolition and removal of the tub efficiently, keeping the area clean everyday and minimizing disruption. The new walk-in shower was installed with excellent craftsmanship — the walls, shower tray, and fixtures are high-quality, and the overall job turned out exactly as we had hoped. Also, what impressed us was Don’s follow-through on the punch list. The few items we brought up — no matter how small — were addressed promptly and thoroughly. Their commitment to customer satisfaction truly sets them apart. We highly recommend this team to anyone looking for quality bathroom remodeling done right the first time. A+ work!"

"Michael was very professional and knowledgeable. He took out my old bathtub and put in a new shower. He also had to add some studs to the wall and redo my plumbing. Work was done quickly and attention to detail was outstanding!!"

"Jonathan and Jeff did a great job! They are very patient and understanding. We remodeled our upstairs to add a master bathroom and replace all the carpet with hardwood floors. Jonathan was very fair with the price when we wanted to change our initial plan. I highly recommend Best Homes!"

"I recently hired Nate to renovate two bathrooms and fix a very old dryer venting system, and he did an excellent job. I had several different contractors come out to provide estimates, but none of them matched the level of detail that Nate provided. He didn’t just break down the labor prices separately; he took the time to make solid recommendations on fixtures, tub types, countertops, lighting, and flooring. He was incredibly thorough and gave me exactly what I needed to make informed decisions. Once the project started, the execution was practically plug-and-play for me. Nate completed the work right on time and kept me updated on everything. I especially appreciated his communication style—he took photos of the progress while he was working so I always knew what was happening behind the scenes. If you want a contractor who offers honest, competitive pricing, total transparency, and great communication, I highly recommend Nate. I couldn't have had a better experience."

Bathtub Replacement questions, answered by experts

The plumbing industry has standardized the sizes for bathtub drains. They are 1 1/2 inches wide to fit all standard bathtubs from 14 to 26 inches deep. The standard sizing is to ensure that the drain fits into the P trap, a special part of your piping that prevents sewer water from bubbling up into your home (yuck).

There are several ways to save money on a bathroom remodel through proper planning and savvy design strategies. To reduce costs, consider the following:

  • Purchase your own materials: Buy your own bathroom fixtures, hardware, and other materials to avoid contractor upcharges and delivery fees.

  • Shop smart for big-ticket items: Save on pricey items like tiles and tubs by shopping sales and at discount stores.

  • Avoid major layout changes: Keep plumbing in its current location. Opt to replace fixtures rather than moving them to avoid significant renovation work.

  • Focus on high-impact, low-cost updates: Make affordable but impactful smaller changes, such as upgrading hardware, installing new lighting, and adding stylish but economical accessories.

  • DIY where possible: Handle easier parts of the remodel yourself, like painting or installing light fixtures, to save on labor costs.

  • Time your remodel strategically: Consider remodeling in the spring, which tends to be a lower-demand time of year and may result in lower costs.

A standard bathtub can be used for soaking, but they tend to be shallower (between 15 and 18 inches deep). A soaking tub is designed to be deep enough to totally submerge yourself in the water (about 20 and 24 inches deep). Additionally, most soaking tubs are freestanding, while regular bathtubs come in various styles with drop-in, surround, and wall-mounted options available.

An alcove tub is designed to fit into a three-walled enclosure in a bathroom. A drop-in tub, on the other hand, is placed into a custom-built frame or enclosure. This frame can be fitted to an alcove, making a drop-in tub a viable alternative if you want a more custom or spa-like look. Because the frame is custom, drop-in tubs offer more design flexibility and a wider range of materials, such as cultured marble or tile, compared to the simpler acrylic or fiberglass of a typical alcove tub. The frame for a drop-in tub can also be placed anywhere in the bathroom it fits, not just in an alcove.

You should consider replacing your bathtub if the tub—or any potential refinishing—is older than about 20 years old. However, acrylic and fiberglass bathtubs have a shorter lifespan (about 10 to 15 years). You may decide to replace your bathtub sooner if there are stains or mold you can’t get rid of, no matter how much you clean it, or if you find leaks and cracks that could lead to costly water damage.
