Lawn Care, LLC is rather new from a company standpoint, but the owner has worked long and hard under his father's guidance for over 10 years. The owner's father owns/owned his own janitorial business, and is now looking to retire. Not wanting to steal my father's name, business, and his outright legacy in what he has created, I wanted to start my own business, under my own name, and gain the same respect my father has with his time in the industry. R.A.M. Lawn Care, LLC is licensed, insured, and bonded. This small business takes pride in the work and seeing that the client is taken care of on all fronts. The owner believes in being upfront and honest, but also being very personable and open to all questions and suggestions. I pray my hard work makes your day easier. GOD BLESS, Morgan Tyler Crawford, Owner of R.A.M. Lawn Care, LLC

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

Yes, you need to use landscape fabric under your rubber mulch. Rubber mulch doesn’t decompose, so putting landscape fabric down can work as a barrier between your mulch and soil, preventing your mulch from mixing with your soil and leaching chemicals like aluminum, cadmium, and copper into it. Also, since weeds can occasionally get through rubber mulch, using landscape fabric as a second form of protection can increase its effectiveness.

Mulching any time of year can attract termites, so there’s no added risk in the fall. The important thing to remember is that termites are attracted to rotting wood, so you need to lay a thin enough layer that won’t trap too much moisture and lead to rotting. A layer between 1 and 4 inches thick should provide all the benefits you’re looking for without attracting termites.

While they’re popular and have a lot of pros, the cons of river rocks include the following:

  • River rocks don’t break down or provide nutrients to plants.

  • These stones can get hot and scorch nearby plants.

  • River stones may heat the surrounding soil to inhospitable temperatures.

  • Rocks can block rainwater from seeping into the ground if installations are too thick or tightly packed.

Most downsides occur when using river rock as mulch in gardens and flower beds. However, you can still incorporate river rocks into your landscape as long as you use them in the correct ways.

Landscape boulders, especially porous stones like sandstone or granite, can crack or break over time. Cracks occur when water seeps into the surface of the stone and freezes. The risk is highest when it rains during the day and temperatures freeze overnight since the moisture has time to penetrate deeper into the rock before expanding.

The depth of your decomposed granite depends on its intended use, but around 3 to 4 inches is the most common depth. Driveways that need to support a lot of weight should be at a depth of no less than 6 inches. Walkways that won’t see a lot of weight but lots of foot traffic should be built at a depth of 3 to 4 inches, and patios should also be between 3 and 4 inches deep.
