40 years of experience

I am a class A contractor and can therefore build your house or an addition. My specialty is custom woodwork. I am a master carpenter and my employees are also especially talented. We make just about anything out of wood, from the smallest turned bowl or jewelry box to an extravagant house of hardwood cabinetry. We also build decks, room additions, and we have experience in restoring old homes. Along with residential services, we also have a considerable amount of commercial experience. Most recently we've built cabinets for several banks. We are a small business of less than 10 employees and have been in the business for over 25 years.

Cabinet Making questions, answered by experts

For most purposes, you should go with wood that’s at least 3/4-inch thick for DIY closet shelves. This is the standard thickness for solid wood or MDF shelving and should be able to hold a good amount of weight (around 80 pounds for MDF and 130 pounds for plywood). If you’re storing tools, camera equipment, or other heavier items, you can go up to 1 1/4-inch thickness for maximum strength and durability.

Make sure your shelves are no more than 12 inches deep. Any deeper and it will become hard to access items towards the back of the shelf. Yet, for larger walk-in pantries, homeowners may prefer 15- to 18-inch shelving to make room for larger appliances and cookware.

All inset cabinets are face frame cabinets, but not all face frame cabinets are inset cabinets. You have three main cabinet door styles to choose from with face frame cabinets: inset, partial overlay, or full overlay. With inset cabinets, the doors and drawers are mounted inside the face frames, so the fronts of the cabinets are flush when everything is closed.

When deciding between stripping or sanding kitchen cabinets, the short answer is it depends on the condition of your cabinets and your end goal for them. If the cabinets are in fairly good condition and don’t have several layers of paint on them, sanding is a good option. On the other hand, older cabinets with more blemishes or marks will benefit from paint stripping, since it will give any future finishes a clean slate.

Plywood is usually the best base material for built-in home office cabinets and bookshelves. It is extremely sturdy, and you can paint or add veneer to it to improve its look. It can support large amounts of weight without breaking down or splintering. Plywood is usually more affordable than hardwoods. However, if your budget is large enough, beautifully stained hardwood cabinets and bookshelves look amazing.
