Asphalt is not the same thing as blacktop. Blacktop is a type of asphalt, but contains less bitumen, making it less durable than asphalt. Asphalt is a better option for major highways, streets, and driveways, while blacktop is more suitable to playgrounds.

Yes, you can seal asphalt before it’s fully cured but you should wait to do so until at least three months after installing it. Otherwise, the seal coat can trap the asphalt’s oils and chemicals, preventing it from fully hardening. This can lead to a weaker surface that’s vulnerable to damage. But if you wait at least three months, applying a seal coat can extend its life by protecting it from water, UV rays, and other damaging elements.

The cost of asphalt driveway repair is usually similar to the cost of average concrete driveway repairs, but maintaining asphalt tends to be less expensive on a per-instance basis. For example, resurfacing asphalt costs about $1 less per square foot, but it doesn’t last as long as concrete and will need more frequent repairs. Therefore, chip seal driveway only works if the traffic volume is extremely low. Chip seal is also less resistant to storms and hails. As impact builds up, the chips may become misplaced, creating an uneven driving surface that sometimes becomes hazardous and may damage your tires or cause your vehicle to lose balance.

Maintaining a driveway depends on the material your driveway is made of. Concrete and asphalt should be sealed to protect against water and freeze-thaw cycles. Cracks and expansion joints should be filled with a flexible polyurethane caulk or asphalt sealer. Before you apply a sealant to your driveway, consider pressure washing the surface. It will take off any loose sealant and any grime that might have caused a stain. Sealing over dirt and stains will trap it under the sealer.

If you live in colder climates, consider using sand rather than salt to de-ice. Sand helps melt the snow and ice without speeding up the freezing and unthawing process of your driveway, which helps prevent cracks from forming from the constant fluctuation of temperatures.
