Hey All! I am a senior at Virginia Tech and I've discovered over the past 10 years that I'm a Jill of all trades. Ranging from irrigation to painting, I can most definitely provide assistance in mostly anything you may need help with. I'm just looking for a little extra money on the side to assist my future education. Here are a few things I can assist with; Inside: small repairs, fixture installation, troubleshooting, painting Outside: small landscaping jobs (plantings, mulch, design, guidance) Just ask, and I will let you know if I believe that I would be suitable for the job!

Handyman Services questions, answered by experts

A contractor specializes in a specific field. They often operate in teams where they have subcontractors to handle specialized problems. So if you have significant plumbing, drywall, or roofing issues, you’ll want to hire a contractor, as the job may require a team.

A handyperson is typically one person who works on whatever jobs come their way. You wouldn’t call a contractor to fix the hinges on cabinets or paint your room. Instead, a handyperson can handle all these issues, saving you from making multiple phone calls.

Yes, you can use a dremel tool to cut plexiglass. Follow the instructions under “How to Cut Plexiglass with a Saw,” and use a dremel tool with a 561 bit instead of a saw.

While handypeople do not need to be licensed in many places, you should only hire insured pros for any home improvement work. Your handyperson should have active liability coverage that protects them and you in the case of an error or accident. Furthermore, if they have employees on your property, they should also have workers’ compensation insurance. If you hire an individual or a company that is not insured and they damage your property, have an accident while on the job, or become injured on your property without insurance, you can be held financially liable.

Cleaning a gutter, replacing fixtures such as a cabinet or light, and painting are common reasons to call a handyperson. You can also call on a handyperson for simple tasks, like assembling new furniture, and complex ones, such as installing a dishwasher. Overall, handypeople are ideal in all areas of home repair that do not require a specific certification, such as with plumbing, electrical, or structural issues.

In most cases, it’s not necessary to tip a contractor, as it’s not customary or expected from most home improvement, renovation, or construction professionals. However, if a worker goes above and beyond, stays late to meet a deadline, works on a holiday weekend, or gives you exceptional service, you might choose to tip them.
