"Outstanding results. High quality Sherwood double-glazed windows replaced the original leaky windows. Great communication up front with Jimmy Pedigo (owner) to include being provided a sample color panel from the factory to ensure interior the interior window frame was correct. Jimmy also came out during the installation fo ensure everything was going well. Installation by Jeff and Chris included lead-safe procedures, removal and disposal of all the old storm and original windows, sealing the window frames on the inside to keep our house clean and always (I mean always) removing dirty footgear before coming in the house. Jeff and Chris' new window installation was flawless. And that's saying something given the almost 110 years this house has had to settle, twist and bow. They trued up each window, shimmed and tested functionality of each double-hung window in a very short amount of time. Obvious they've been working together for a long time. Of note, they discovered water intrusion in a tricky corner of the house and their new installation approach with the "aluminum window frame wrap" and caulking technique should put an end to the leaks. In addition, their aluminum wrap approach would make any window look good. Finally, Jeff took the time to demonstrate how best to operate the windows, especially teaching us the best way to release the top of the windows to fold them in for easy cleaning. Clean-up of the end of each workday (2-day job) was complete and thorough. No waste was left. I'd buy from Hometime Windows again without hesitation. In fact...I'd make sure Jeff and Chris were the installers."

Window Door Contractors questions, answered by experts

Window screens can take anywhere between 10 minutes and an hour to replace, depending on the complexity of the replacement and the accessibility of the window. Replacing the screen inside an existing frame normally takes longer than replacing an entire screen, frame and all, if you purchase a prefabricated screen already mounted on the frame.

Window repairs cost $175 to $615, depending on the type of repair. Because double-hung windows have two sashes and multiple pieces of hardware, like locks and handles, there are many parts that can break over time. Repairing locks, latches, or other hardware costs about $75 to $200 and is easy to DIY. Fixing one or multiple sashes costs about $200 to $600.

The steps to replace a retractable screen can vary, but these are the general steps: First, remove the screen cover to expose the screen mechanism and remove the clip that holds the screen in place. Next, depress the end of the screen mechanism so it releases from the door frame. Take your new screen and fit one end into the frame. You may need to rotate the mechanism to engage the spring before inserting the other end into the frame. Finally, pull the screen down the length of the door’s opening and lock it in place with the clip.

No, but removing window screens will achieve a deeper clean. If you aren’t sure how to remove your screens, you can still clean them while in your window. You can follow the same cleaning steps, but you may not be able to get into corners or struggle to clean the entire screen if the window is up high.

The screen material you choose depends on your needs. Here are some differences to consider:

  • Fiberglass is the least expensive but needs replacing more often.

  • Aluminum suits almost any job and doesn’t stretch as easily as fiberglass.

  • Pet-resistant screens are more expensive than fiberglass or aluminum, but they’re also wind and weather-resistant.

  • Metal screens, like stainless steel, are the most expensive material for rescreening your porch or sunroom. However, they last for years and are golf ball-resistant.
