Small jobs welcome

"Angie's List turned up Robin's Cleaning Service as a possible contractor for carpet cleaning. We went with her since she's independent and relatively local (Gretna). She came today, worked hard for over two hours to clean our Master BR and closet, lower staircase and roughly 1/4 of the lower living area, and did a lovely, attentive and thorough job for $225. Very pleasant--does carpets and other cleaning, painting, landscaping, mowing and pressure washing between morning and evening school bus driving for Gretna public schools (all three levels). Just a really sweet lady whom we enjoyed getting to know. If you have odd jobs, give her a chance. Robin Hall, 434-728-0529, is highly recommended! Painting questions, answered by experts

On most untreated wood fences, there is no need to sand before treating. You typically only need to sand if there’s an old coat of paint or stain on your fence. If you do need to sand off a previous paint or protective coating (like an old stain or sealant), use medium-grit sandpaper.

Staining a wood fence isn’t guaranteed to prevent warping, but it can help. Plus, it’s a beginner-friendly DIY project that you can finish in a few days. If you want to try it, you’ll start by stripping it of any old stain or paint, then sanding it. After that, you’ll clean it and spot-treat any mold or mildew. When it’s dry, you can apply the stain.

Yes, you can paint galvanized chain link, but the process is a bit more difficult as it requires additional prep work. Before applying the primer and paint, you must remove the original coating from the metal, which can be time-consuming. If the original coating is not removed, the primer and paint will not bond properly and cause peeling over time.

Whitewashing isn’t permanent, but it can last for a long, long time. When you apply it correctly or have a seasoned pro whitewash your brick, whitewashing can last for 20 to 30 years or longer. Whitewash is very durable and typically requires little maintenance, making it a great project for most DIYers.

Maintain your wattle fence by inspecting it at least twice per year for loose weaving and degrading branches. Replace any seriously degraded sections, ensure water drains properly around the posts, and trim any sprouting branches if you used green wood. If you notice the weave loosening, you can often tighten it by gently pushing down on the top branches. You can also apply a natural wood preservative every two to three years to extend the fence's lifespan.
