"I was very impressed with Sentri Homes - their customer service was excellent. They sent a subcontractor to install some vinyl laminate in my bathroom and he ended up getting glue all over the carpet in our bedroom. The sub ended up ghosting both me and Sentri, leaving me stuck with a ruined carpet. Sentri stuck with me for over a month to get the carpet replaced with the identical original and to get the vinyl job 100% completed. The carpet was a Home Depot exclusive and Sentri handled everything with them. I will be using Sentri for a much bigger renovation I have coming up soon, because I know that they will make sure everything gets done right no matter what problems come up. The vinyl looks great too."

"Clic Homes replaced our 37 year old aluminum siding with a beautiful siding called “smart siding “. Their crews were hard working, kind, and always on time. We could not be more pleased and satisfied with the quality and professionalism that Clic Homes provided. With no hesitation, we would hire them again, and highly recommend them to anyone else."

"Jake Toombs, President of Millcreek Homes is the singularly most impressive professional that I have worked with in forty years. Jake built our custom home on time and on budget. Jake is an impeccable communicator. Jake was very patient with my wife and I as we made innumerable decisions through the build process of our first new home. Jake was 100% transparent on pricing, timing, viability of options requests, etc. Jake referred us to a fabulous architect and we also worked with similarly-qualified support people in choosing every last detail of; cabinets, appliances, floor surfaces, paint choices, windows, hardware, etc., etc.. We received an extremely high-quality custom home that was at least 25-30% less than comparable builders. Moreover, almost three years after our home was completed (July 2021), Jake continues to be available to me for any questions that I have. I STRONGLY recommend Jake Toombs and Millcreek Homes to anyone who wants to have a uniquely positive experience building a new home."

"Kent Nickell Construction are amazing to work with! As a single mom, I was overwhelmed with finding a builder I felt I could trust and that wouldn’t charge extra on things. They were very clear with cost and gave me a cost guide and budget that was easy to follow with the sub-contractors they were working with. Any time I had a question they took the time to explain things out so that I could understand. They took me aside and encouraged me to do plans for a future basement so that when I finished it I would have the plans all figured out, and then priced out the home with and without the basement so I could make a decision from the get go. I didn’t think I would be able to do a basement rental right away, but with them taking the time going over the pros and cons, it was an easy decision to put a rental in right away to help me with mortgage costs and didn’t cost me a ton more. I built in 2023, one of Utahs wettest years we had in a while, and they went above and beyond with making sure that my basement would be protected. All the while keeping me informed. They knew my needs would be different than a double income family and I felt like they made sure any choices I made would benefit me in the long run and not break my budget. Honestly working with them I felt like I was working with family. They cared about things like if I would have had my dad or brothers build a home for me. You can tell they build each home as if it were their own. I appreciated the time and care they took to give me a beautiful custom home that I could afford and not like one of these quick up, cut corners, type of work that I was afraid I would end up with not having a construction background myself. I am truly grateful I found them as a builder and would recommend them to anyone. Thank you!"

Custom Home Builders questions, answered by experts

Local regulations dictate how big an ADU can be, and there may also be restrictions on the percentage of the main residence’s square footage an ADU can have. In most cases, an ADU must be smaller than the main residence, but check with your local building authority to confirm restrictions on ADU size.

Renovating or remodeling an existing structure is usually less expensive than the cost to build a new house. That’s because you can save on the costs of new building materials, laying a foundation, framing the entire building, and installing new materials and utilities throughout the house. However, if a home is in very poor condition or is incredibly old, you could spend more on upgrades and restoration compared to building from scratch.

There are energy-efficient options when building a cottage. Select green building materials, high-performance insulation, and energy-efficient windows when designing your cottage. Options such as solar panels, efficient HVAC systems, and LED lighting can lower your utility bills and reduce your environmental impact. Many builders offer energy-efficient upgrades as part of the design process.

Yes, professionals offer mantel and surround customization for aesthetic appeal.

Above all, the downside to building a new house is a longer timeline. You need several months to finish the build, depending on the supply chain and labor availability in the meantime. Building a home compared to buying one is also more expensive, both in the building process and when it comes to mortgage rates and property taxes.
