"We are very happy with the work done and the quality of our new basement. The crew was always polite and remembered that this was a home first and work site second. All of our questions and concerns were answered and addressed throughout the project. I really appreciated that the total cost we agreed to in the beginning didn't change and there weren't any price increases during the process. We had a great experience and would recommend Manwaring construction to any of our friends."

"Clic Homes replaced our 37 year old aluminum siding with a beautiful siding called “smart siding “. Their crews were hard working, kind, and always on time. We could not be more pleased and satisfied with the quality and professionalism that Clic Homes provided. With no hesitation, we would hire them again, and highly recommend them to anyone else."

"The renovation went very smooth I really have never hired a contractor before this, but I’ve heard horror stories.... so I think I just got super lucky. I was amazed at the speed everything was getting finished. He also kept everything super clean each day and cleaned up extra stuff that wasn’t his, I was really impressed. Everything was in budget as well not only that but after paying my total, at the last minute I wanted to add a digital deadbolt lock. It took a month for me to remember to buy one first of all, when I had it I gave him a call. He seriously came to install it the next day and after asking for an invoice he just said it’s on the house! Jorge is just a really good guy and I will always go to him because he made a seemingly stressful situation super easy for me!!! And his finished work is beautiful."

"Jake Toombs, President of Millcreek Homes is the singularly most impressive professional that I have worked with in forty years. Jake built our custom home on time and on budget. Jake is an impeccable communicator. Jake was very patient with my wife and I as we made innumerable decisions through the build process of our first new home. Jake was 100% transparent on pricing, timing, viability of options requests, etc. Jake referred us to a fabulous architect and we also worked with similarly-qualified support people in choosing every last detail of; cabinets, appliances, floor surfaces, paint choices, windows, hardware, etc., etc.. We received an extremely high-quality custom home that was at least 25-30% less than comparable builders. Moreover, almost three years after our home was completed (July 2021), Jake continues to be available to me for any questions that I have. I STRONGLY recommend Jake Toombs and Millcreek Homes to anyone who wants to have a uniquely positive experience building a new home."

"I recently had the pleasure of working with Kent Nickell on a home addition project, and I can confidently say he is the best contractor I’ve ever worked with. Throughout the entire process, Kent was incredibly responsive and detail-oriented, making every step smooth and manageable. Living in the home during construction could have been challenging, but Kent and his team maintained an impressive level of cleanliness and respect for my space, which I truly appreciated. As with any construction project, issues inevitably came up, but Kent was always quick to communicate and resolve them with professionalism and care. His commitment to quality and customer satisfaction is unmatched. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a reliable, skilled, and conscientious contractor."

"Better than I could've hoped for. Bob and Brandon were awesome! They showed up for the consultation early, but not obnoxiously early. First thing I appreciated. They were honest about what needed to be done. This was a Saturday, said they would have estimates for me on Monday. They called me Sunday, directly, which I appreciated. Not only did they give me different options, they were up front with what each one had, and didn't have to offer. They also informed me they wouldn't be able to start until Wednesday due to another job they were working on. Though it sucked, I understood, and appreciated their honesty. Got another call a short while later informing me they could actually start the next day on Monday due to an unexpected wait on some tile for another customer. I was floored! I was so happy to be a priority for them, really made me feel special. My wife and I needed this done so we could sell our house and were not looking forward to waiting. Needless to say, we felt blessed. The job took two days, it wasn't big, just beyond my own skill set. Not only did they put new siding in, but they went above and beyond and made new frames for all the windows, put in a new flood light, and caulked one more window for us. The place looks amazing! These two take pride in their craft, and that's what I'll call it because it was more than just work to them. Not only was it good, but done a lot sooner than we were expecting. I was so happy that I gave them both a $50 gift card to Texas Roadhouse. Should I need to the services of a good handyman again, I'm calling these guys first."

Custom Home Builders questions, answered by experts

How long it takes to build a custom home or rebuild a home after a disaster varies depending on many factors, but averages between seven and 14 months. Smaller homes or homes that don’t need a re-poured foundation may take less time to build than larger homes or homes without an existing foundation. Material availability, contractor schedules, and permit and inspection timelines can all affect how long your house takes to build.

Yes, you can finance new construction, though the process often requires a different type of loan than one for an existing property. There are several financing options available:

  • Construction-to-Permanent Loan: This is a common option where a single loan covers the building costs and then converts into a traditional mortgage once construction is complete and you move in.

  • Construction Loan (Stand-Alone): This type of loan provides funding only for the duration of the construction project. Once the house is built, you will need to pay the loan in full, typically by securing a separate, standard mortgage.

  • Builder Financing: Some custom homebuilders offer their own financing options, which may only require a down payment to begin the building process.

  • Bridge Loan: This can be a useful short-term loan to fund your new construction while you are in the process of selling your old home.

  • Home Equity Options: If you are building a second home, you might be able to use a home equity line of credit (HELOC) or a cash-out refinance on your current property.

It's also important to be aware that some lenders may have restrictions on financing for DIY house builds, so be sure to verify that you can secure financing before starting your project.

The early stages of building a house are harder than the later stages; laying the foundation and framing the house are two of the most challenging steps. However, it varies for everyone. Some people have difficulty installing HVAC, plumbing, and electricity, while others find it harder to plan the house and secure the necessary permits.

Above all, the downside to building a new house is a longer timeline. You need several months to finish the build, depending on the supply chain and labor availability in the meantime. Building a home compared to buying one is also more expensive, both in the building process and when it comes to mortgage rates and property taxes.

In most cases, you should get an architect before you hire a builder. An architect will be the one to draw up formal plans for your project, including guidelines and even material lists for your builder to follow during construction. Many architects can even help you find builders, choose one for your project, and negotiate prices. Some are also willing to act as project managers throughout the process, working closely with a builder from start to finish.
