"I met Dion when he was in the process of staining my neighbor's outdoor pavilion. She was very happy with his work and wanted me to check it out. I too was impressed with Dion's work. I had planned on staining the exterior of my own house, but after talking with Dion I asked if he would stop by my house and give me a bid. He stopped by my place the next day and I ended up hiring him. Because he sprayed my house, the preparation took as much or more time than the actually staining. He was meticulous in masking the windows and areas of my house that needed to be protected. My job took place in late fall and cold weather was approaching. I didn't ask or expect Dion to do this, but he worked beyond 'normal' work hours each day - up until dark - just to make sure that he could beat the weather and that my job was completed. He was careful to inspect everything he sprayed and to 'brush out' the few areas that needed extra attention. I recommend Dion without hesitation!"

"Great! They were very responsive, wonderful follow through. They fulfilled every commitment and the timetable to a “T”! The project manager made three visits within the three day project including the day after the painters finished. He returned to check their work, to see if any touch was needed and to verify that we were satisfied with their work. There were a few very small touch ups needed, that were spotted by the PM, not us. The crew returned the next day and took care of them. This crew, Erick, Christian and George were about the very best contractors we have ever had. Professional, great to work with, thorough, and super friendly, to boot! We would recommend them, without question, to anyone! When we need painters again, we will call Five Star. Definitely live up to their name!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan and protect it from the elements. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it is not impervious to damage from moisture, sun exposure, splintering, fading, and rot over time. Applying a protective finish creates a shield that preserves the wood's strength and appearance, potentially extending its life by five to 10 years.

When choosing a finish, it's helpful to understand the difference between a sealer and a stain. A sealer sits on top of the wood, whereas a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. Because it penetrates the wood, a stain generally offers better protection against UV damage and rot and lasts significantly longer. For the best results that also preserve the wood's natural color, consider using a near-translucent stain.

To maintain protection, plan on reapplying the stain or sealer every two to three years, either as a DIY project or by hiring a professional.

Choosing whether your deck should be lighter or darker than your house is a matter of personal preference, as there is no right or wrong answer. However, considering the pros and cons of each can help guide your decision. Darker colors are often chosen because they show less dirt, footprints, and marks from daily wear, making them easier to keep clean. On the other hand, lighter deck colors tend to stay cooler in the summer. From a design perspective, using a deck color that contrasts with your home's exterior can help make the deck a more defined and distinct feature. Consulting color theory can also make the process of choosing a complementary house and deck color combination easier.

Yes, pressure-treated wood can occasionally turn green due to certain preservatives, such as copper-based chemicals, used during the treatment process. These chemicals react with the wood, creating a greenish tint. The good news? It's temporary, and the color will fade over time. Staining or painting can also help hide any unwanted hues.

The best time to paint your deck is when temperatures are neither too cold (below 60 degrees) nor too hot (above 85 degrees). Always paint your deck when there’s no risk of rain. For fast-drying paint like acrylic or latex, ensure your deck can dry for at least four hours. Oil-based paints take longer to dry and may require 48 hours to completely cure.

Wood stain is not flammable after it dries. The solvent in wood stain is what causes the liquid form to be highly flammable, but the stain drying process involves the solvents dissolving, which leaves behind a non-flammable product on your wood project. Wood stain is, however, flammable before you apply it, so you should always store partially full cans and used wood stain rags away from sources of heat and open flames.
