"I had Zionscapes out to redo my entire yard landscaping a few months ago. I wanted it done in the spring so I could use it in the summer. I don’t normally care enough to leave reviews. I wanted to wait a few months to see how it held up before I left a review. Working in the construction industry I was extremely impressed with their professionalism and quality. I’ve never had a company communicate with me as much as they did to make sure I got exactly what I wanted. I had turf and a putting green put in as well as a walkway to an area with pavers and a fire pit. Social media can create some pretty unrealistic expectations so I was really impressed when the final product turned out just like the pictures and ideas I was showing them. While planning, I expected to take out another mortgage. I was super happy with the fair prices for the quality of work! I worked directly with Tyler and Chris. Cool to see a father/son duo work so well. 10/10 Recommend!"

"Eathen was fantastic to work with. These guys helped me design and create a beautiful oasis backyard and the final result was stunning. Eathen specifically was extremely professional, friendly and most importantly he was helpful. They worked with me on the design and had excellent suggestions while keeping it low pressure, and within the budget constraints. I would absolutely recommend South horizon landscape!"

"Crescent Solutions was great to work with. They designed and installed a new sprinkler valve box in our yard. We had several issues with the way it was originally done and they knew just what needed to be done to correct the issue and make it right. Great company, honest work fair pricing!"

"Dylan communicated and scheduled well to arrange the assessment/estimate and the work project. Colton explained the work that would address my requests, then did exactly as agreed. I was very comfortable having the team in my home and yard while I was at home and away. As we reviewed the finished projects, they were happy to make final adjustments to meet my preferences."

"Down South did a great job, it is nice to have a team that communicates so well. Jared helped through the whole process and kept everything transparent and when your building a home the is refreshing. Justin on the excavator also communicated well and did a great job. Thanks guys. We have another job coming up soon and you are the team we will be calling. Thank you again. Robert and Lisa"

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

The soil around your foundation should slope down and away from your home, not toward it. If the grading drops the farther you are from your home, you can enhance the slope by removing more soil. Mark off a few feet from your house and dig up some of this soil. Regrading around your fountain should encourage water to flow away from your home and not collect or “pond.”

The best size rock for your landscaping depends on the design, as different boulders serve different purposes. If you want to group boulders to create a natural-looking cluster, you’ll need a range of sizes. Otherwise, here are some suggestions:

  • Small boulders (smaller than 12 inches across): Best for landscape edging and fire pits

  • Medium boulders (12–24 inches): Best for retaining walls and water features

  • Large boulders (more than 24 inches): Best as standalone landscaping features, steps, or walkways.

Of course, you can mix and match sizes to create a unique display.

If you are xeriscaping a lawn from scratch, your best bet for preparing the lawn is to work with a xeriscaping specialist in your area. The most common first step to making the transformation, however, will be to remove the turfgrass from your lawn. The subsequent steps will often include amending the soil to support new plants and installing low-drip or drip irrigation systems.

As much as you might try to keep a healthy, nutrient-rich lawn, you still may notice signs of St. Augustine decline (SAD)—a viral disease that discolors your grass blades. St. Augustine decline looks like:

  • Discoloration in the leaves (chlorosis)—leaves appear yellow and splotchy

  • Decline in growth

  • Leaves turn black within 3 years

  • Grass appears less vibrant

  • Grass begins to thin

  • Root rot

  • Grass takes longer to recover

DIY landscaping is possible, but professional services offer expertise in selecting appropriate plants and designing functional spaces that complement the natural environment and adhere to local regulations.
