In most cases, it is safe to return home after mold remediation is complete. You should follow your mold remediation technician’s recommendations, but most pros request that homeowners wait one day after the process is complete to move back in.

After returning home, be sure to carefully inspect the exposed areas for any remaining signs of mold spores. Contact the mold remediation company if you detect any lingering mold.

Just because you find mold in your home does not mean you need to pursue professional remediation services. You can often clean small amounts of surface mold, such as in bathrooms or on windowsills, using household products. However, extensive mold growth, persistent odors, or mold caused by water damage require professional remediation. A good rule of thumb is to hire a pro when the mold is in an area larger than 10 square feet, poses health risks, or affects the structural integrity of your home.

Determining if vermiculite contains asbestos requires professional testing. Visual inspection alone cannot confirm the presence of asbestos fibers, as these fibers are so small that they are not visible to the naked eye. A certified asbestos inspector will collect samples of the vermiculite insulation and send them to a laboratory for analysis. Microscopic examination using polarized light microscopy (PLM) or transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is necessary to accurately identify asbestos fibers. DIY sampling is strongly discouraged due to the potential health risks associated with asbestos exposure.
