I am the son of Gaylon Kerr, a well known high-end builder in Lubbock. I was employed by him from 1984 until 1991 then upon his retirement I began my Handyman service. I have 2 neighborhood cul-de-sacs where I work for every home on the street. I have ONLY very happy customers whom are truly now close friends. I can provide many many references. I have worked for 25 years from word of mouth (from my excellent work) and absolutely No advertising done. I am very timely and meticulous. I am dependable and trusted. I know people in the know at businesses all over town and have a healthy reputation. I run my business casually and friendly with no stress, fears, or misunderstandings. I do everything from painting to hardware to pinstriping your car. Bee hive removal and repair ? Been there and done that. ... a few times ! I DO work 100% on my own, however I do have some helpers that I call when I could use a stunt-double. Get on my list... I'm all yours for the entire punch-list without my having to re-list you for other chores.

Furniture Refinishing questions, answered by experts

No. Once you apply refinishing oil, it will continue to seep into the wood, making it difficult or impossible to refinish over top of it. Since the product contains an oil that’s meant to penetrate existing finishes, almost anything you put on top of it will bring the previous layer of stain with it. If you plan to refinish your cabinets more than once, it’s a good idea to go with the traditional method of sanding before applying a new finish to the surface.

Removing the original paint or stain before refinishing is a good idea, as it ensures the new finish bonds strongly to the wood. If you skip the stripping or sanding step, the new finish may peel or flake away from the railing easily. Using a wood stripper will completely remove the old stain or paint while sanding will help to prime the surface.

Wood stains last anywhere from two to five years, depending on exposure to the elements, your local climate, the type of stain, and the surface it’s on. For instance, vertical surfaces last longer than horizontal surfaces. Some types of woods, like dense hardwoods, will require a recoat yearly, as they are too dense for the stain to absorb. In any event, apply a recoat every 2 to 4 years. As for storage, a can of unopened stain can last up to 5 years, though results may vary.

Depending on the piece, there are times when you can paint over painted furniture. Start by applying a high-adhesion primer so that the new topcoat will stick. However, if the paint is peeling or chipping, it’s best to sand it down, use a paint stripper, or try a deglosser to ensure your new paint will adhere.

The cost to refinish wood furniture ranges widely, depending on the size and type of furniture. Here’s what you can expect to pay to refinish the following wood furniture items:

  • Table: $150–$700

  • Dining chair: $100–$400

  • Rocking chair: $200–$500

  • Bar stool: $100–$250

  • China cabinet or armoire: $500–$3,500

  • Dining set: $1,000–$3,000

  • Coffee table: $150–$800

  • Dresser: $300–$2,000

  • Bed: $350–$2,000

  • Pool table: $300–$600

  • Kitchen cabinets: $1,800–$5,000
