"I hired Robert in May 2018 to correct the scary DIY exterior electrical that was at my daughter's new home. His quote wasn't exactly cheap, but then again, I really didn't have a clear idea of what all needed to be corrected to bring it up to code. So, for the money I was really impressed. He had to add some new switches to the electrical box to untangle some dual lights, put in all the electrical wiring for the exterior light on the house and 2 places on the garage, as well as a gazebo; he trenched all the wiring conduit at the appropriate depth, boxed the connections safely, installed all new motion sensor lights, brought the dedicated gas line up to code and WOW! When I realized all that he had to do to bring everything up to code and seeing how well it all worked - he earned every cent. I really like know my daughter's house is safe and has well-working motion sensor lights. After, when we noticed the exterior switch cover was missing for the outdoor fans, Robert came all the way back over and replaced it the next day. Later, when *my* house started having power failures in the middle of the night, and kept cutting off, and I was charged $50 by the City of Houston to learn the fault was on my side, I called Robert. He came the next day and he figured out that one of my breakers was getting too warm carrying too much load. So he switched out my breaker in my house to a larger one and also at the breaker box in the townhouse complex where I live. Again, I have complete faith in his competence, honesty, workmanship and haven't had a speck of trouble since! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Whole-house generators can run continuously for extended periods, even for weeks at a time (around 400 to 500 hours), as long as they have a sufficient fuel supply. However, this type of extensive use will increase wear and tear and can shorten the generator's overall lifespan. During long periods of operation, it's important to check and refill the engine oil as needed, potentially as frequently as daily depending on the model. If your generator uses a fuel tank, ensure it is kept full to prevent unexpected shutdowns.

A portable generator can supply power to selected appliances and circuits in a home, but it's generally not designed to handle the entire household's electrical needs simultaneously. Portable generators have limited wattage capacity, so they are only designed to power essential devices and electronics temporarily until local power is restored. If your power needs outweigh the capabilities of a portable generator, consider installing a whole-home generator instead.

DIY is possible for basic setups. Professional installation ensures safe and proper electrical connections.

Yes, natural gas generators can work without electricity. Natural gas generators are a common type of backup or whole-house generator that operates when the electrical grid isn’t working. The trick is using a transfer switch (which usually needs to be installed with the generator) that safely switches the home electrical system from the power grid to generator power when needed.

Sizing a generator is a careful process that requires calculating the electrical load of your entire house. You have to take into account every device you want to use and their wattage requirements, plus the wattage needed to start them, and look for a generator that can safely run all that at around 80% capacity.

In more practical terms, a small home can run on a 10,000-watt generator (and if you only want to power a few key appliances, much less than that). A mid-sized home may need something between 15,000 and 22,000 watts. Larger homes require 25,000 watts or more.
