#1)
I live 15 miles outside the city limits of Bossier City, I always look at the location of service providers I call to minimize problems or miscommunications.
A) This company is listed at a location that is less than 25 miles away ( Angie's List says 18.6, but I believe it is actually a bit more);
B) The filter shows them as being one of 3 companies that " Definitely Service My Area ";
C) According to an Angie's List review, they have done work in my area ( within 5 miles?) which was rated excellent ("A") on 12/12/2011 ( just 4 months ago) which said, " He took my honey do list and went from one project to the next until he was finished. He did the work in 5 or 6 hours." Also, Jeff's website states " No Job Too Small".
#2)
I have a collection of fairly significant jobs needing to be done: a 20'x15' roofed and wire-enclosed addition to my garage; an 8'x8' or more well house including leveling and concrete flooring; an entry gate and fence; and some interior remodeling and finishing - which I would have thought would be substantial enough ( vs. say hanging a ceiling fan) to warrant the 25 miles. I was under the impression that most people in the building or remodeling trade expect a degree of commuting to work locations.
#3)
The nature of my projects are a bit more than ordinary "honey-do's", but smaller in scale than most contractors are interested in.
The company's website shows a variety of projects in HOME REPAIRS and HOME REMODELING that seemed to be a close fit to the scope of my projects.
#4)
This company has a significant number of excellent reviews. Apparently, he does great work. Of course, that's very important!

WHAT HAPPENED:
I contacted Jeff Windham on April 12th or 13th ( Thur./Fri., I can't remember for sure which day) and outlined where I live and the info for the projects so he could tell me if he was interested and could we schedule a date/time for him to come look it over and give me a quote. He said he was pretty busy, but he'd contact me the next week about coming to review the projects/quote. We discussed Wed. or Thur. tentatively because I would be working Mon.-Wed.
So, I waited to hear back from him. Friday ( April 20, a week later) I still had not heard anything from him and called him. I had to leave a message, but he called me right back. We discussed it again. He said he'd get with me the next week, but he was so booked it would probably be about 3 weeks until there was an opening in his schedule to begin work on. I told him, although I'd like to get this done, nothing was pressed for time to complete and I could be flexible on that.
The next Monday ( April 23), Jeff called mid-morning to schedule an appointment for that same afternoon, but no later than 3pm. This was because he had to have time to review and discuss the projects and allow ample time to drive home before 5pm. He said based on his GPS, I was 45 minutes from his shop ( I guess his shop is not at the address shown on Angie's List because that is no more than 25 miles away - I used to live in that neighborhood and know personally). I don't really care, but that also seemed sort of odd to me that his hours of availability would be in conflict with how most people work. Maybe this was a special situation that I'm not aware of.
He didn't seem very interested in doing so, but when I asked him about the next day he said he could meet me then, too. But either way, I work Mon.-Wed. so I asked him to please go ahead and just meet with me that day. So, on short notice I had to adjust my work schedule to be available for him - and, once again, he wanted me to remind him of what I was wanting a quote on.
Less than an hour later, he called back to say he was going to pass on my jobs because it was beyond the area (geography) he wanted to work in. I have tried to make myself clear about the location and types of work.

MY COMMENTS TO ANGIE'S LIST READERS:
A) Jeff and his team of subs are apparently very busy, so be prepared to get in line.
B) The info placed on Angie's List concerning BUSINESS DESCRIPTION: "I have my own subs so if I can't handle it I have someone who can." and the filter for SERVICE AREA does not seem accurate.
C) Jeff was very polite every time we spoke, but communication seemed to be an issue. He seemed, for lack of a better explanation, "distracted" when I spoke to him. It would have been far more professional for him to simply decline me to begin with if the distance was a deal-breaker for him.
D) He has great reviews and must do good work. Maybe so much so, he can be selective and needs to revise the information shown online.

IN CONCLUSION
? I'm not angry, but somewhat frustrated in the way things happened.
? A week and a half later, I'm no farther along than when I began.
? I should have devoted a whole day to interviewing a variety of "interested" handymen/contractors and would have had at least one to choose from at this point. At this pace, I'll never get done.
? I'm not really inclined to using forums to complain, but this is the basis of Angie's List - sharing experiences.
[ ? I'm not very impressed with my first experience with Angie's List, now either. I used the tools to the best of my ability, but the info was not accurate. I have also tried to locate Dentists in my area and the info was not much better than the Yellow Pages. This may not be a great service in my area even though I am 15 miles from Shreveport/Bossier City - respectively the 3rth & 8th largest cities in Louisiana. ]"},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/la/shreveport/handyman-for-hire-inc-reviews-2355104.htm"},"position":3}]}
I had gotten someone else to look at the garage door opener and they were unable to repair it and thought we may have to get a new one installed. I called Twin City and Derrick came out that same day and repaired the door. He was running late and I was not at home when he was able to come...
