"Last October, my sister, an elderly veteran living alone, contracted Genie Bath Systems to remodel her master and guest baths. She was diagnosed cancer and passed before the remodel was complete. Which, to be fair as we were not able to work with Genie while attending to my sister. The contract was expensive. Very expensive. The cost of the remodel is close to 1/4th the value of her home. I noticed there were issues with the remodel that showed a surprising lack of attention to detail. Genie sent people to address the issues twice. Yet issues remain. My calls to my contact at Genie are now being ignored. Also, the only document I have for the remodel is the contract my sister signed. It is not detailed. I have and continue to ask for a breakdown of the cost. An estimate or work order. This request is also being ignored. I am disappointed and have to wonder why Genie will not provide this information. I have several other questions for Genie that I will not go into here. But based on my experience, I cannot recommend Genie. In fact I would warn anyone considering Genie to be very careful about the cost of the contract."

You can cut countertops without chipping by using your saw correctly and having a new fine-toothed blade. You can also put masking tape on the front of the countertop material across the cut line and cut from front to back. However, it is very hard to cut countertops without chipping them, especially if they are made of stone or more fragile materials like laminate. If you notice stains or cracks on your counter, the good news is that you can generally remove stains or learn how to repair laminate countertops yourself. For stains, a mixture of one tablespoon of baking soda and a few tablespoons of water left on the stain for about 10 minutes can remove them. For cracks, use a laminate repair or fill kit.

Extensive chips and cracks may require a full replacement of the countertop. The cost to install a new countertop is around $3,100 on average. But, if the damaged area is relatively small, you may want to consider repairing it yourself or calling in a qualified professional. Depending on the material, some epoxy and sandpaper may do the trick. Or you can consider painting laminate countertops or refinishing butcher block countertops.

You should always seal cut countertops to prevent damage and to keep them looking their best. The right way to seal countertops depends on the type of material. For laminate and wood, apply epoxy or other specialty sealers by pouring it onto the countertop and letting it flow across the whole surface to the edges, guiding it with a paint stick or putty knife. You will need to move quickly so that it does not dry or harden before you are done. For stone countertops, use a sealant specially manufactured for your type of stone and apply it according to manufacturer directions. 

You should never use gritty or abrasive cleaners to clean your Formica countertops, and the same goes for scouring sponges, steel wool, or anything acid-based like vinegar. Formica can't handle high heat, so never place anything fresh from the oven or off the stovetop on a laminate surface because it will scorch.
