Dryers pull in air from a circular opening in the back of the dryer. The dryer's heating element heats the air, and a blower fan circulates the hot air through the drum. The hot air travels outside the dryer through a vent or is cooled by a heat exchanger that condenses the steam into water and sends it down a drainpipe or to a containment compartment.

To optimize airflow and energy efficiency, regularly clean vents and replace air filters, schedule periodic professional duct inspections, and seal any visible leaks. Proper maintenance prolongs ductwork longevity and performance.

Regularly check and clean the lint screen, inspect vent connections, and ensure proper airflow to maintain clear vents and reduce blockages or buildup.

Using a leaf blower to clean your dryer vent isn't a good idea. Theoretically, the leaf blower should push the lint and debris toward the exterior vent opening, helping it exit. That's usually not what happens, though.

Instead, the lint can get stuck further in the vent, creating a blockage and making the problem worse. You need a scrubbing tool, such as the rotating brush head on a dryer cleaning kit, to push the lint out of the ductwork.

Signs include longer drying cycles, a burning smell, excess lint behind the dryer, and the vent hood not opening properly.
