"My office space had a large open area to enter, but didn't have any doors. I wanted more privacy and quiet and the doors would help with this. Charles met with us to find out exactly what we wanted done. He sent us an estimate and it was a fair price for the work which included labor and all necessary parts and paint. We paid a deposit in advance, and the longest wait was on the manufacturer to deliver the doors to Charles that we had requested. Once Charles received the shipment, he called and arranged a date to install them. He completed the job in one afternoon, including paint and advised us to leave them open to allow for expansion. He'll return to make any minor adjustments. The doors are exactly what we wanted and he did a very professional job. He cleaned up everything, and when he left, it looked like the doors had always been there. His invoicing and payment were done online which suited us perfectly. We are happy to recommend CK Handyman."

"The installers were courteous and seemed to be knowledgeable and experienced at performing these installations. They cleaned up after themselves gave me literature that came with the disposal unit and suggested I register it with the manufacturer."

"The pocket door was a bit of a challenge. I thought I might have to buy a new set up but Joe fixed it very well. It only needs painted now. He also installed an exhaust fan/light in my guest bath and he did an excellent job. Base molding looks better now that it is tacked to the wall. Joe was great. I will request him for future repairs.

"Dishwasher and ceiling fan service was wonderful. Garbage disposal is on its way, the shower fixture was a little messy and have to return 3 times to fix, pray its the last time. But not Choice Warranty's fault. Alittle pricey but allows you to pay them out."

"I needed all 4 outdoor water spouts fixed, they arrived the same day and quickly. It was realized that the parts needed to be ordered and they came back with the parts the next business day. By than my toilet handle had broken and they fixed that too. Service was quick, clean, reasonably priced and professional. I would hire again. N. Gray"

Install Garbage Disposal questions, answered by experts

These appliances do unscrew, but you need to disconnect everything properly when you replace your garbage disposal. Make sure you shut the power off to the area first and check that it’s off with a voltage detector. Disconnect the main drain line and P-trap, and then disconnect the dishwasher drain line if you have one connected. You can then unscrew your garbage disposal using a disposal wrench. Just make sure you disconnect the electrical lines before removing your appliance.

While the drain connection for a garbage disposal is nearly universal and fits standard sink drain holes of 3 1/2 to 4 inches, the size of the disposal unit itself is not. You must have enough space in the cabinet underneath your sink to accommodate the disposal's housing. A larger model may not fit in a compact cabinet or if the existing plumbing is arranged in an unusual way. Before buying a new garbage disposal, measure the available space under your sink. If you are replacing an old unit, it's often easiest to choose a new model of a similar size.

On average, a garbage disposal can last anywhere from 7 to 12 years, with many models functioning well for about 10 years. With heavy usage, a motor may last a minimum of five years, while grinding plates will wear down over time. It's generally a good idea to consider a replacement if your unit is approaching the 10-year mark. Other signs that it's time for a new disposal include frequent leaks, persistent clogs, lingering odors, lack of power, or unusual noises. If your unit is not that old, it's worth investigating if a less expensive part, like a rubber seal or a loose hose, is causing the issue.

No, you do not need a garbage disposal to have a dishwasher. A dishwasher will work without one, and while it's rare to see a home with a dishwasher that doesn't have a disposal, it is possible. The two appliances pair well and are often installed together because a disposal simplifies meal cleanup.

However, your dishwasher should not be used as a replacement for a garbage disposal. Subjecting it to continuous food leftovers can lead to major clogs. If you choose not to install a garbage disposal, you should thoroughly rinse your plates or scrape excess food into the trash or a compost pile before loading them into the dishwasher to prevent plumbing issues.

Most garbage disposals have a reset button that can be triggered with a tool as simple and accessible as your index finger. That said, if you need to perform a more in-depth troubleshooting step, like manually moving the arms inside the unit or rotating the impeller plate, a hex wrench is the most common tool you’ll need. Most garbage disposals come with a hex wrench.
