"Alex is a sincere and dedicated entrepreneur. Of course, I have never met or seen him before. When setting up my new business, I looked into business owners related to his field through the Angis list. He was the first to contact me, and he was the most proactive in understanding my needs. He arrived punctually on the scheduled day without a single delay. He demonstrated incredible professionalism in his work and possesses the thoughtful communication skills that clients require. I believe this stems from his good character and personality. Throughout the entire time he was working, I felt as if I were chatting and laughing with a childhood friend I had known for a long time, deeply sharing and understanding each other's lives. Before I go off-topic, I want to say this: If you value privacy or protection for your home or business windows, I highly recommend contacting Alex. He will prove through his work that your choices are reliable and trustworthy."

"We had a full panel of windows facing west tinted. Steve really knows his craft and his expertise is unmatchable. We felt very comfortable putting our trust in him for a job that is quite an undertaking and can be expensive. We thought the price to be very fair. The men who did the job were polite and professional. Now we are enjoying the benefits; a cooler home, lower A/C bill and less wash-out as one looks out to the view, which is now more vibrant. Can's say enough how happy we were with the results."

"It was a little difficult to coordinate schedules to set up the initial appointment since Jeremy is quite a busy person and runs this business himself. However, he did find a time to come out for a quote and share very valuable knowledge. A few days after, he installed tint on the back windows of our house where the sun sets everyday. It makes such a huge difference with the tint and the sunlight is not nearly as blinding. It also looks fantastic on the outside! Overall, Jeremy is a very genuine person that really cares about the customer and the quality in his work. If you are patient enough to coordinate your schedule with Jeremy, I guarantee you will not be disappointed in the final result. I highly recommend ProTechSun for any and all of your tinting needs."

Window Tinting questions, answered by experts

The average cost for home window tinting is around $600, with most homeowners paying between $150 and $1,600. Costs can also be calculated per square foot, typically ranging from $2 to $100, or per window at around $75 each. For example, tinting one or two windows might cost between $200 and $350, while a larger project of 13 to 15 windows could range from $4,124 to $4,747.

Several factors influence the total project cost, with the number and size of the windows being the most significant. Other key factors include the type, shade, and quality of the tint film, as well as labor costs. Additional treatments, such as low-emissivity (low-E) coatings, can also increase material costs.

Window tinting offers several benefits, such as making your home more energy-efficient by blocking harsh sunlight, protecting furniture from fading, and increasing privacy. For this reason, many homeowners choose to tint only the windows in specific areas where direct sunlight and privacy are primary concerns.

Cellular shades, also known as honeycomb shades, are the most energy-efficient and insulating window treatments. Their honeycomb structure is made of soft fabric that forms layered cell pockets. These pockets trap air, creating a thermal barrier that reduces heat loss in the winter and blocks heat gain in the summer. For even greater insulation, consider double- or triple-cell varieties. Side-tracked cellular shades, which seal the edges of the window frame, can further minimize air leaks and maximize energy efficiency.

Window security film has a few key benefits that make it an enticing home improvement:

  • It’s much more affordable than shatterproof windows or hurricane windows.

  • It improves your home’s energy efficiency and can save money on heating and cooling bills.

  • It makes it harder to break into your home.

  • It helps prevent dangerous shattered glass after an impact.

  • You can tint it to provide additional protection from the sunlight.

The most popular tint percentage for home windows is 35%. Generally, most homeowners choose a visible light transmission (VLT) between 50% and 35%, where lower numbers mean less sunlight enters the home. A 35% tint blocks over half the incoming light while still allowing plenty of natural light, which can improve energy efficiency and comfort. If privacy is a primary concern, you can opt for a tint of 50% or lower to make it more difficult for people to see inside. However, keep in mind that very dark, thick tints may offer fewer energy-efficiency benefits.

Unlike cars, there are no laws regulating window tint percentages on homes, so you can choose what you think is best. It is often a good idea to hire a professional, as they can show you samples of how different tint levels will look in your specific property, helping you make the right choice.

While it is possible to install home window tint yourself, it is a challenging task that is often best left to professionals. The process can be tedious and time-consuming, requiring steady hands and a great deal of patience, especially for a first-time installer.

Common mistakes in DIY applications include visible bubbles, imperfections, and film that either hangs over the edges or doesn't fully cover the glass. These errors not only look unprofessional and detract from your home's curb appeal but can also reduce the tint's effectiveness in blocking sunlight and heat. If you have struggled with applying protective films to smaller items like phones or tablets, you may find this task particularly difficult.

Attempting the installation yourself and making a mistake can lead to wasted material and the additional cost of hiring a professional to fix the issues or redo the job. Although hiring a professional involves labor costs, it typically guarantees a high-quality, seamless appearance and saves you from having to do the work over again.
