I started learning how to build and fix things by helping roof a chicken shed when I was six. I learned the handyman trade under my dad, a former engineer who's been a handyman in Collin County for 15 years. My focus is on doing quality work, making sure you know what you're getting and what your options are. I also like teaching people how to take care of their house. Homes don't come with a manual for new owners, and they're built differently in different countries. I know you'll be able to take better care of your house if you know a little more about how it was built and how it works. I started my solo HandyWoman business in Fort Worth in 2017. I was very busy for about six months before my tools got stolen and I had to stop. Since then I've periodically done jobs with and for my dad between and during regular employment. I'm restarting my business where I live now, in North Dallas. I look forward to helping you make your living spaces more comfortable and functional. Check out the portfolio I'm building at my website, AlexBradleyHandyWoman.weebly.com

Furniture Reupholstery questions, answered by experts

Paying to reupholster a piece of furniture means you want to hire the right upholstery service, especially for a piece that’s expensive or carries a lot of sentimental value. In your search for the right upholstery company, be sure to:

  • Ask around to see if friends or family know of any upholsterers

  • Find reviews of the company or individual

  • Look at the photo gallery of their work to see if they work on furniture like yours and if you like their work

  • Check qualifications and references

  • Ask the upholstery service if they work on furniture like yours, what their schedule looks like, how they handle payments, and how long the job will take

Doing your own upholstery work is possible, but it’s typically a better idea to leave the work to professionals. Without experience and the proper tools, it’s difficult to get a professionally finished appearance for your furniture, and many DIYers end up spending money on tools and materials only to hire a professional when they can’t get the fabric to look right. If you have reupholstery experience, feel free to give it a shot. However, if you’re not confident in your skill level or you’re working with antiques, it’s worth the money to hire a pro.

Many upholsterers allow you to provide your own fabric, which can help control costs and ensure you get the exact style you want. Some upholsterers offer a selection of fabrics to choose from, while others may require you to purchase it at a fabric store. Be sure to check with your upholsterer about fabric suitability, required yardage, and any additional fees for using customer-supplied materials.

Upholstering allows personalization, extends furniture life, conserves resources, refreshes decor, and often costs less than buying new pieces.

The time to reupholster a couch often ranges from one to three weeks, depending on the upholsterer's workload, fabric availability, and the complexity of your couch. This breaks down between 10 and 20 hours if you hire a professional, or 20 to 40 hours if you DIY. Custom features or repairs may extend the timeline.
