Word of mouth, I'd gotten some great reviews from some neighbors and friends of mine regarding this local company. I explained my situation, and how I needed this work completed pretty quickly since I was getting ready to travel. They sent a very friendly representative that same day whom provided me with some great ideas on how to save some money, was will to work within my budget, and provided a free quote. I quickly scheduled them for that week, and they came through for me in a big way. Before you begin landscaping with rocks, put down a weed barrier or landscape fabric to prevent pesky weeds from poking through. 

Stump grindings are usually safe to use in soil, but in some cases, it’s not recommended. Wood chips in particular can bind nitrogen in the soil, which will make it difficult for grass to grow. That’s why it’s important to remove most wood chips and use healthy garden soil if you want to cover the stump spot with grass. Large wood chips may attract beetles and could encourage the growth of fungi when they decay, so you may want to remove them when using the grindings.

While they’re popular and have a lot of pros, the cons of river rocks include the following:

  • River rocks don’t break down or provide nutrients to plants. 

  • These stones can get hot and scorch nearby plants. 

  • River stones may heat the surrounding soil to inhospitable temperatures. 

  • Rocks can block rainwater from seeping into the ground if installations are too thick or tightly packed.

Most downsides occur when using river rock as mulch in gardens and flower beds. However, you can still incorporate river rocks into your landscape as long as you use them in the correct ways.

While you don’t need to put anything down before mulch, you can apply a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent weed growth. As long as you remove weeds before you spread mulch, you should be in the clear. But a herbicide is something that you can put down before mulch as an extra layer of protection.

Small gravel is the better option since it creates a stable, even surface that’s easier on paws and hooves. Large gravel can be uncomfortable and may shift too much underfoot. So if you’re using gravel in pet or livestock areas, go for smooth, rounded small gravel to prevent injuries and discomfort.
