"I engaged McBride to install two ceiling fans at my house. The installer, Justin, did an excellent job on both and I'm very pleased with Justin and the work he did for me. For my next electrical project I will be calling McBride."

"The security lights were replaced and covers installed for the outside electrical outlets . Also a pull chain light was replaced with a motion detected LED light in a closet. Garage lights were replaced with LED lights. Christopher and his associate have spent a lot of time coming back to adjust an outside security light. "I needed an additional lighting fixture wired in and mounted above our pantry as well as an outdoor outlet in our patio ceiling, Cool Hand crushed it! They were extremely respectful of our home and wore disposable booties over their shoes every time they had to come inside from the attic or backyard. The install was extremely clean & professional, and of course worked flawlessly. Luke was very kind to our curious daughter who didnâ t make his job any easier! We wouldnâ t hesitate to hire them for the next project, they are 1st class."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

A home that is 2,500 square feet will likely need a 20kW to 25kW generator. Consult your local generator installer to confirm the generator size needed to power your home before purchasing a new one. Be sure to consider how much power your necessary devices need to run.

To power a central air system during a power outage, the whole-house generator will need to be at least 5,000 watts, and this number will significantly increase for larger units. Check the specific wattage requirements of your AC unit to choose the right generator size. Consider consulting a generator installer to ensure your whole-house generator meets your electrical load needs.

Generators run on a variety of fuel types, ranging from natural gas to solar power. Keep in mind that fuel costs varying by type:

  • Natural gas: $2,000–$21,000 per year

  • Liquid propane: $2,000–$21,000 per year

  • Diesel: $3,000–$20,000 per year

  • Gasoline: $500–$3,000 per year

  • Solar generator: $2,000–$25,000 per unit

  • Battery backup: $10,000–$25,000 per unit

While diesel is relatively stable, it won’t last nearly as long as propane and you may have to replace it if it sits unused for too long. Diesel can sometimes struggle to work efficiently or start engines during especially cold weather, so it’s not the best choice for every climate. Compared to fuels like propane and natural gas, diesel generators tend to be noisier and create more exhaust, which isn’t always ideal for home use.

In most cases, there are no tax credits available for home generators. However, that’s a general statement that applies to federal tax credits, so you might have access to state or local tax incentives. You can check the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (DSIRE) for more information about your area. If you hire a reliable home generator installer, they should also know if there are any state or local perks you can use to reduce your installation costs, including tax breaks and rebates.
